Fascinating! We were surprised at how much is left of the mining work here, and how much has been done to preserve the history and inform the public. The road up is windy but has excellent seal. We felt that visiting the bottom (Conn's Creek) first gave us the best impact. We will come back and do the guided tour.

The last time we visited Denniston was 17 years ago, and my has it changed, thanks to the dedicated work of Dept of Conservation and the locals. There are now large information boards and displays, with photos of the people who lived in Denniston when the coal mines were active. You can walk to see where the coal bins were dispatched for the steep journey down the mountain and also some amazing lookout paints. Take a short drive down to Burnetts coal mine and see the area and harsh conditions those families lived in. A unique look into a piece of West Coast history and well worth the drive up to see. Much appreciated the clean public toilets available too.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we drove up. However we were stunned to see the views and walk around the well appointed mine trail that documented life and work on the Denniston Incline. A lot of thought and work has gone into this site and it shows. Well worth a visit.

We had read "The Denistone Rose" and seen the DVD about Denistone before coming to the tour The tour is excellent - we did the express and not the longer tour as we were travelling with my elderly mother The express tour still goes into the mine and was perfect for my 83 year old mother Well presented Excellent staff The hardship that the miners and their families endured is shocking and akin to slavery After the tour we went to the bottom of the incline and also the cemetery and recommend that others do the same In the cemetery all the headstones face towards the Denistone Plateau Although I am not sure that everyone buried there would have really wanted this We visited on a cloudy day with some occasional light rain and this only added to the experience We will definitely go back and spend more time exploring the area as there are many old sites to explore
