Milford Sound Experience Full Day from Queenstown

676 reviews
Cruising Milford Sound is among New Zealand’s most spectacular activities, but the mountain scenery that lines the coast is just as gorgeous. Experience both on this full-day trip from Queenstown, traveling through the heart of Fiordland National Park, and then cruising all the way to the edge of the Tasman Sea. This excursion includes plenty of sightseeing stops throughout the day, along with a picnic lunch to enjoy onboard the cruise.

We went early morning shopping before our tour for the next stop of Arrowtown. This store was reasonable price and it had a massive selection of t-shirts and local souvenirs. I was able to get a few items, especially my plum New Zealand t-shirt. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We stopped at Te Anau on our way by coach to Milford Sound and poked our heads in here just to get out of the rain. I'll admit, I assumed it would be full of the usual cheap made-in-China tourist tat. I was wrong. In fact, it was so good I made a point of going there again on our way back the following day. It's quite crowded and there are lots of little key-rings and stuffed toys and magnets and postcards, as you'd expect. But much of what's on offer, including the clothing, was way above my expectations in terms of quality, and the prices are so reasonable. I bought a beautiful black hoodie with a (reflective) silver fern on it, designed and made in NZ from thick, quality cotton, on sale for just NZ$20. I also got a really cool t-shirt, again designed and made in NZ, for NZ$10, as well as some quality postcards and nice little bits and pieces to give as gifts back home. On both occasions the women behind the counter were absolutely lovely. Highly recommended.

There were two souvenir shops next to each other when we visited. We entered this one first because the other Chinese shop next door had a tour group and was packed. We picked quite a number of souvenir items to buy, and thought that there was no harm in conversationally trying to ask if they could sell the stuff to us at a slightly cheaper price since we were buying a few things. However the owners (Japanese couple), especially the man, answered very rudely back to us, saying "You don't have to buy it, its okay" several times and physically waved us off with his hand. This surprised us because that kind of reaction was uncalled for (if you don't give discounts, just apologise and sorry we can't). If you make your customer feel unwelcomed, then by all means we won't bother next time. After all, the souvenir store next door which we visited later sold slightly different things, but at a cheaper price, and with much much friendlier staff too. Would not recommend buying anything from this shop, as the owners are unwelcoming and items sold are mostly overpriced anyway (this is in comparison to other souvenir shops we visited later on in Queenstown)
