About
Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto.

- JV_TravellingBerlin, Germany172 contributionsA wonderful experienceThe trip to the cave over Lake Te Ans the visit of the cave is definitely worth a visit. The cave in itself is already amazing and the trip by boat in the cave in complete darkness with the glow worms above is absolutely worth it. However you share this experience with quite a big group and the tour guides seem a little exhausted after the third or fourth tour, which is understandable.Thank you for being such a caring and understanding guest. It was an absolute pleasure guiding you through our backyard. We hope you made wonderful memories with the RealNZ crew and our glowing friends.Written 10 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 December 2022
- HahnTravelsLiverpool, Australia1,213 contributionsThis was a highlightThoroughly recommend - the cruise across the lake is great. Then a short walk to an area you where you are briefed and then smaller groups taken in to the cave. The walk in the cave was interesting, listening to the rushing water. Then into the small boat for a short cruise under the glow worms. Very informative and enjoyable. Then a lovely cruise back across the lake. All in all just over 2 hours for the experience. Thoroughly enjoyed itWe're so glad you enjoyed the underground adventure! - TommoMelbourne, Australia49,652 contributionsFantastic experienceThis was a must do activity in Te Anau. We went by boat from the visitors centre in Te Anau Town. When we arrived we were provided some education and visited the glowworm in their caves. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures but the interior of the caves with water rushing through was amazing along with the glowworms. I was in awe of how many there were and the kight they produced. It was like looking in the sky at all the stars. You must do this activity.Thank you posting this review! - Tom LSydney, Australia76 contributionsGreat experienceFirst encountered the caves 24 years ago and each time we've visited it has remained a special experience. Just the cruise across Lake Te Anau is worth it with some beautiful scenery but the glow worms are spectacular, too. The underground boating trip is great,. The numbers on the tours are high but the whole operation runs very smoothly.Nothing makes us happier than guests returning to our experiences. Thank you, Tom. The caves were incredible and we were surprised to see so many glow worms so close. My partner has done the Waitomo caves and he said the Te anau one is much better. - ReadtheEde6 contributionsBeautiful wee cave experienceDefinitely don't miss this chance to check out this fantastic cave! Scenic boat ride across the lake followed by a small guided group tour through this unique cave. Even if you've seen glowworm before this cave is different and the short boat ride at the end in the pitch black is memorable. Well worth it thanks!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2023
- Amberley_KentLondon, United Kingdom13 contributionsFabulous highlight of our stay in Te AnauThis was a surprise highlight of our stay in Te Anau. The guide at the caves was excellent, delivering interesting insight and guidance with enthusiasm and a nice element of fun. Seeing first-hand how the underground water flows had carved out the caves over thousands of years was fabulous and then witnessing the glowworms themselves in total darkness was magical. The visit was completed with a brief but fascinating presentation on the glowworms while we enjoyed a complimentary hot drink. Overall, our visit to the Glowworm Caves pleasantly exceeded expectations and I would highly recommendVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2023
- nickmR7617FX9 contributionsBeware of the dark!Took the 30 minute ferry ride over to the caves. After a short walk we were split into groups of 12 and given an amusing commentary on what we could expect in the caves. Had a 20 minute walk through the caves with a lot of ducking and weaving. Quite exciting and very interesting. Lots of rushing water and bridges. Came to the highlight of the tour which was a boat which we all climbed into. Let me say at this point that if you are claustrophobic or scared of the dark, don't go. We settled in and then all the lights went out. Our guide pulled us along by an overhead rope whilst we banged into the walls of the cave. Overhead we could see what we came for, glow worms. All in all a good tripVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2023
- traveladdict3500Hasselt, Belgium782 contributionsDo a trip with Real Journeys : a must see !We were not sure about this trip because we thought it would be a tourist trap with a few glowworms and a lot of darkness. We are glad we did the trip. It is amazing how many glowworms you can see. It is not only interesting but has a high fairy tale vibe. The guide on the underground boat was a real gem. Highly recommended ! Make reservations months in advance to be sure of your tickets.Visited February 2023Written 17 April 2023

This was our first visit to any Glowworm caves, and we were very impressed. It's a busy trip, but extremely well organised. The boat ride along the lake is a nice bonus, with spectacular NZ Fjordland scenery.
The cave tour started with a safety briefing and explanation of the origin of the caves. Then a walk into the caves with a guide explaining about the geology etc. It's quite cool, dark & damp so a jacket is well advised. Then it's into a boat for a short river ride in almost pitch blackness - except for all the glowing worms on the walls & ceiling.
Then its back to the reception area for hot drinks & a talk about the worms - which are much more interesting than we expected !!
Highly recommended.

Well worth the visit. Great boat ride across the lake past the dome islands and then on to the caves. The guides were funny and informative. The caves and glow worms themselves were breathtaking.

The whole trip was well organised. There was a guided tour boat trip on Lake TeAnau, a screen show about the glow-worms, complimentary tea or coffee and then we were divided into small groups to be escorted into the cave. While inside, we were seated in the dingy and in silence viewed the spectacular twinkling lights.

Found it underwhelming. Boat ride is 45 minutes on the way out and 20 minute return. You get to go in the caves but the boat ride is only 15 minutes. Expected more worms.

Well organised and far more interesting and exciting that we anticipated. A sensory assault. Glow worms a little sparce but the under ground cave system with waterfalls and torrents of water an amazing experience.

Wasn't expecting much from the Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour, but the reality far exceeded my expections. I've visited a lot of caves and while I have seen better glowworm displays and there are no decorations, this was one of the best cave experiences I have ever had. Walking up a solution tube on a grate a couple of feet above an active stream was just amazing, then it opens out into a larger cavern with a stunning waterfall that you climb up and around to reach the short boat ride in the dark to see the glowworms. The caves had been closed for the last week due to flooding, so we where really lucky and the creek was at its most boisterous. Absolutely stunning.

I'm not big on caves for fear of getting stuck down there, and I'm not big on glowworms - after all what is there to see? Oh how wrong I was!!!
This is a truly spectacular experience. Breathtaking to see just so many glowing lights in this underground wonderland. The sheer scale of it is something else and you get right up close in the rowing boats. One or two twinkles this is not.
The guide is fantastic in regards to both the knowledge imparted and on keeping everyone safe in negotiating the wooden walkways and out on the boat.
A much longer trip than I imagined and one of the greatest experiences of my trip to New Zealand. Do it if you can!
There is also an information place outside that gives you a further talk on the area and life of the glowworms and even a nice beach area to walk around with some birdlife.

Booked and paid on-line, plane flight cancelled .rang to reschedule as soon as fight was cancelled, they said no refunds and no to a rescheduled time. Just a rip off will never use REAL NZ for any of our tours. We are nz citizens in business for 30 years this is the worst experience ever. Will contact commerce commission to lay a complaint and see if there is a breach of the FTA and or CGA. Spoke to local te anau residents and this seems to be common practice from REAL NZ.

A comfortable, picturesque 30 minute boat ride with informative on board commentary takes you to the glow worm caves. There is a toilet on board and plenty of space to either sit inside or upstairs outside.
Once at the caves you are divided into small groups of 10 and given a quick rundown about the tour.
Warren our guide was fantastic and very passionate about his job! It was an easy walk through the cave with handrails either side. It was wet but not slippery - wear warm preferably water proof gear.
Guides assist you onto the boat for a magical, serene experience to see the glow worms. Rushing water is loud in the cave and at the start of the boat ride which younger kids mightn’t be a fan of. The main glow worm section was quiet (no talking allowed) and pitch black.
After the boat ride we walked back through the cave and a small rainforest walk takes you to a viewing/information area and a bit further down is a theatre/information centre with free tea and coffee, biscuits to buy and toilets. One of the guides showed us a great video and chatted about glow worms before we boarded our boat back to Te Anau.

Is the morning tour at 745am or night tour at 930pm better? Just want to make full use of the price I'm paying for this tour.

For 9.30pm tour, it’s a bit late and the sky becomes dark, thus you may not have good fjord view during the first 30mins of boat ride. However, if you prefer dinner first and tour later with no consideration of view during boat ride, then 9.30pm should be ok with you.

Hi there,
The vessel that transfers you across Lake Te Anau has a passenger saloon with free tea and coffee, so you are protected from the rain.
Thanks,
The team at Real Journeys.

Hi, we are visiting in January, do we need to pre book, do particular times sell out ? And if so how far in advance is necessary ?

We didn't pre book anything except logging, and had no problems. There are several tours every day, and we are flexible. We booked when we arrived to TeAnau evening before, and got on the tour in middle of the day, since morning tours were booked. So if you have limited time and have a list of things you may want book early. The same with Milford sound, since we came to the office the evening we arrived in TeAnau, we could only get the boat tour, while the kayaking was booked.

Is this tour strenuous for people with walking impediments?
Cathie P
Westlake Village, CA802 contributions
Yes, in the caves it is very dark and walking on a steel cat walk path! It is narrow & quite unnerving! At the top there is a small raft type boat that cruises around the pitch black caves, difficult to get into even with help! Don't think I would go into the caves with the narrow cat walk with walking impediments!
There is about a 1/2 hour ride on a boat to the Glow Worm Caves from the shore line of Lake Te Anau! We loved it, but lots of bending through the narrow caves!

we are planning to visit the glow worm Caves on the 10th October 2018 but we will be arriving in Te Anau about mid afternoon and was planning to go on the 4.30 departure- if we missed that it was possible to go on the next tour? is it essential to pre book in October?

I would look to go during the day, as the boat ride over has fantastic views and should you miss the boat you will not automatically get on the next boat.

We will be visiting the area June 1-19 and traveling by camper van. I realize this is your winter time, we are from Hawaii. Will your tours be operating during this time? Nearby campsite recommendations?

Check out realjourneys they run the trips to the caves. Roads and weather in Fiordland is variable, we got caught with a large snow fall a few years ago in the area in early June, but if you can handle the cold and have flexible days, it is great.
The trips to the caves seem to run through all seasons. I am unsure of the camp sites at this time of year, but my son liked the one at Manapouri.
Hope this helps
