About
A sophisticated yet casual wine bar with a great range of whiskies & NZ wine / beer, including our very own 'Fiordland' range. Happy hour 5.30-6.30pm daily. Black Dog Bar is attached to Fiordland Cinema - you can take your local wine / beer in to the movie theatre with you! Lovingly named after Billy, the Black Labrador.

Nice Vibe Nice Wine

Stopped in here before and after the short Fiordland film in the cinema associated with this bar on the recommendation of our accommodation. You can take your drink in with you to the movie then return to the bar after for another. Looked to be some nice platters of food on several tables nearby but we had a dinner reservation elsewhere so didn't eat here. Would happily return.

Found some whiskey

Thought we’d gone the wong way lol, but found this tidy wee bar with air con tucked under the cinema. Lone staff member was good. Enjoyable stop in our mini Te Anau pub/bar crawl.

Cute little place

Right next door to the theatre. You can sit and enjoy a drink, whatever your preference may be, or grab it and take it into the cinema. They even have a terrace outside.

Good atmosphere, Had good food after a long hike, not bad selection, though I wasn't expecting much but thought a bit pricey but no alternative ....

Stylish bar, great atmosphere, awesome staff
Feb 2017 • Couples
We were staying in the Cinema Suites upstairs so this was just too handy for us to pop down and grab a beer or three. The staff were really friendly and it was lovely to chat to them. The owner made a special point of coming over to introduce himself and very kindly shouted us a beer which was a lovely touch.

The decor is lovely, it has a very stylish feel to it. It has indoor and outdoor space so if the weather is good, which it was when we visited, it's nice to sit outside and watch a little bit of Te Anau walk by.

The food menu looked amazing. Unfortunately, we didn't get time to try it, but what we saw emerge from the kitchen looked vibrant and well presented.

This is also the perfect place for pre, during and post-movie food and drink as it forms part of the cinema next door. This place has absolutely everything you could need for a lovely evening in Te Anau!

Amazing
Jan 2017 • Couples
Stumbled across Black Dog chasing a light but satisfying feed - and boy were we satisfied! We tried the venison, pork/hare and whitebait tapas. All were delicious - in particular the whitebait.

We talked at length with the owner/head chef about dishes we had (including a rundown on the whitebait industry!) and found that he'd recently sold up as owner/head chef at well known Redcliff and started up Black Dog only 3 wks ago. He also plans to add a food truck to the main drag in Feb - which will be a handy addition to the region. I see it being nothing but a hit given the quality of his food and customer service.

Bit of a let down
Nov 2015
I checked out the internet before heading out on my first evening. The black dog appeared to be the most promising of fairly limited choices. Their much publicised craft beer was nowhere to be seen. neither was the black dog although to be fair he might have had the night off. Staff were off hand although they did seem to spend a lot of time with some customers. Decor and layout were pleasant enough but I would not go back.

Lovely pub attached to the cinema
Apr 2015 • Couples
The receptionist at our hotel, The Kingsgate, advised us to visit this pub for a quick bit to eat then to go to the cinema to watch a film about Fiordland. What a place a pub with good food and wine and then into the cinema, wish more places were like this. The food and wine were excellent and what a lovely little cinema with an excellent short film about Fiordland - well worth a visit.

By far the best bar in Te Anau!
Our favourite spot to visit in Te Anau. Contemporary, classy, and very reasonably priced drinks. And the platters are also delicious! Love the Black Dog Bar.

Thanks so much for your review Kiwiontour! We're a swanky but comfy little place, and keep our prices reasonable. Glad you liked it.
