We have done the Tongariro, Milford, and now the Routeburn during our time in New Zealand and so far the Routeburn was our favorite! If you're on a budget I'd definitely recommend tent camping. It is much more affordable than staying in a hut. We...More

If you are going to NZ for 2+ weeks, you must consider 3 days on the Routeburn. Whether you do it guided or on your own, this is one of the most spectacular and accessible hikes in the world. Eye-popping scenery and a great backcountry...More

If you are doing the Milford Track and have a good level of fitness, you could do the Routeburn track straight afterwards.

We only did one day, not the whole track. This meant only going to the first hut. But man, what a beautiful walk. Gorgeous blue rivers, rain forests, open plain flats like something out of Jurassic park. So many differing landscapes. The return journey to...More

I'd highly recommend Trackhoppers, first class service, local knowledge and Michael and Kiyomi are lovely to deal with.

I completed the Routeburn with my fiancé a few days ago. We got so lucky— it rained and snow the day before our hike but we had sunny skies and not a drop of rain. It took us 11.5 hrs, starting at the Routeburn Shelter...More

Stopped on our way back from Milford Sound to travel on the hike for a couple of hours. The track is very well maintained and is passing through beautiful countryside with outstanding views - highly recommended

Glenorchy would be a good place to start, as the town, the drive there, and the part of the track from Glenorchy's side are gorgeous! I would recommend using Google Maps as the signs pointing to the road end aren't that... More
