Watch out for parking
Jun 2021
Nice view, good cruise.

Does not agree with their parking term. $20 for 5 hour and you can pay per hour! So 6 hours of staying is $40. Unless you do your research prior, there is no sign or any direction of where the free parking is. Apparently you have to walk 30 mins from the free parking to the terminal. Come home and recived $55 tickets for parking.

Apparently it is to promote their bus tour from Queenstown and Te Anau, totally disagree with this business model.

Again, once in a lifetime view.

Underwhelmed
May 2021 • Couples
We thought we would do the drive as we spend a bit of time in the south island and this was one thing we hadn't gotten around to doing. There is so much hype about milford sound so had fairly high expectations. Weather was okay but we knew it can be touch and go due to the mountains and location. It was Fairly quiet because of the lack of tourists because of Covid. I Would hate to see the place busy. We just found everything underwhelming. Best part was the drive in. I wouldnt do the cruise again. They cruise at walking speed because its a very short distance and they need to make it last the 2 hours. The first waterfall about 100 meters into the trip was the best. But it wasnt amazing. Just a waterfall. The rest were terrible. The seals in one area are just seals. We saw 3 in this area on our trip. You will see far more in Kaikoura. Seriously the only reason you would be impressed with the cruise is if you had lived in a cardboard box your entire life. Do the drive in and spend 5 mins taking a look around if you must. But avoid the rest.

Parking

Our experience in Milford Sound and cruise was magical, even with the pouring rain. I have ever seen so many. Wonderland in the rain.
We were surprised when we came home to receive a parking ticket. No where was the signage that fine the ticket was for 20dollars.
The fine $55.00, $ 35.00 administration fee whattttt. This is from LPR the people looking after the parking. With people like you charging $35.00 administration fees. Thought you wanted people to visit. Yes the $20..00 is OK. But not the administration fee. NOWAY.

Tourist not all of NZ Is like this. Please take care.

Must see

Its just one of those places that you can't really get until you've actually been there. Granted we were there when it was almost completely empty of people so we had an even better experience. Standing in the carpark of Milford at sunset, while the Kaka screech through the trees way up in the hills and hearing it echo throughout the area was pure magic. The entire road in to Milford sound was an experience in itself, every where you look its just amazing.

The cruises are great, good value, but not cheap. We used Jucy and found them great. Take your rain coat.

We have talked about visiting for a long time and I’m so glad we finally did it! Wow! What an incredible place we have on our doorstep New Zealand! It was definitely worth the trip. We did a three hour cruise with Southern Discoveries.

Disappointing

I could not fault the spectacular scenery BUT . . . Milford Sound has been bastardised by greed for the tourist dollar. The constant noise pollution from planes and helicopters offering scenic flights, and the excessive volume of the commentary coming from the tour boats echoing off the mountains, just ruined what should have been a beautiful, peaceful day in this stunning environment. My Milford experience was at a time when only NZers were able to visit, due to COVID boarder closures. I shudder to think what the noise pollution would be like in normal times.
To add insult to injury, parking cost minimum $20.00. This gave you 5 hours parking, but there was no option to park for a shorter time at a lesser price.
The information centre/cafe was a disgrace and embarrassment to our country.
Doubtful Sound is a better option on every level.
