Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This path was just gorgeous! No traffic and incredible views. The problem is there are LOTS of hills. My husband and I are reasonably fit but those hills were tough. Instead of struggling we enjoyed it much more by renting electronic bikes and just pressing turbo when we needed a little help getting up the hills. We also only rode until Rainbow Reach to avoid riding on the highway. It was about 3 hours round trip and just beautiful!

Was a bit dubious if we were up to this considering it is 28.5km each way Te Anau to Manapouri return. But once we got into it, it was a good ride. Easier to see the scenery on the return trip, as foliage blocked a lot of the river and lake. But still nice riding in the forest part. Only down side is the signage is not clear when you are needing to go between the track and the State Highway. Added a few extra kms to our trip!

There are a few hills on this ride but an E bike makes it easy. Very pretty spots along both Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. About 5km of the ride is on a highway.

A great grade 2 ride with mostly gravel and 2 areas of single track one being 800m long the other about 600m.

Take some kai with you in case nothing is open in Manapouri and I recommend taking the wee signposted detours. There is a small section on the road, and when you exit the track this part isn't signposted so make sure you turn right, you then cross over the road again after a few Km onto a gravel road and back onto the track.

Following the water is mesmerising, however be prepared for some sandflies when you stop for breaks.

A great ride through wonderful scenery. Entry points from the road are not signposted. I missed them and biked mostly on road back to Te Anau. Trucks speed making the road section dangerous. Drivers seem discourteous to cyclists. A local advertising campaign might be necessary.

It would be great if this path was extended further up the lake, but well maintained and great to connect Te Anau with Manapouri.

Well constructed track that is easy riding for any ability. There is a bit of rolling up-and-down, so if you’re not bike-fit hire an e-bike from Wild Rides and make it easy.
Top tip: when you get to Supply Bay Road, ride down through the forest to the bay. Beautiful mossy forest that is accessible from the road. A hidden treasure.

If you’re cycling the lake to lake it’s important to know that a small part of the ride will be on the main road. Although it’s not hugely busy you will have to be aware of where to return to the track particularly if you are cycling Manapouri to Te Anau.
The sign posting is very poor so you can easily miss the track off the main road and end up cycling to far on the road by accident.
The cycle track itself is mainly wide and well looked after so not full of pot holes. It does have so ups and downs but not too bad if you don’t have an e-bike. The best part of the track is the Te Anau end if you don’t have time to do the full there and back against
Well worth a ride or walk.

Some outstanding views and a great variety of landscapes. A good surface overall but a little challenging at points for unfit or older riders ( answer - hire an e-bike). Plan a few hours if you want to do the whole trail. We hired bikes from Outside Sports (the only one open on a Sunday) and the two ladies there were lovely and very helpful

My friend and I walked sections of this trail during the COVID level 4 lockdown, so unfortunately we weren't able to hire bikes and experience the whole thing. Instead we walked chunks of the path, setting out from Te Anau and around the lake towards the control gates, and off down the L2L trail. The trail winds through woodland, following the course of the river and often has great views across to the national park.

We saw quite a few native birds and ducks along the way, including a whio! There are several rest stops and benches along the path, and although nobody seemed to mind a couple of walkers using the cycle path (due it being very empty at that time) we did occasionally have to move out of the way of oncoming cyclists. I'm sure it would be fine to walk in the height of the season as long as you're careful and don't walk in the middle of the track! Lovely walk out of Te Anau.
