The visitor center told me about the bird sanctuary and advised to go at feeding time. I wandered about when I first arrived, not knowing how large it was. There was very little signage. I was just about to leave when a woman asked if...More

My expectations weren’t of a full on zoo. I found what I expected, aviaries of local bird life. Easily accessible with lots of information. Especially great place to see Takahe. Injuries and rescued birds are kept here alongside some endangered breeds such as Antipodes Parakeets....More

The bird sanctuary at Te Anau is around the lake about a mile out of the town itself. Unremarkable in many ways, and presented in a very ordinary way, it is nevertheless home to 5 endangered Takahe birds - and they are certainly worth seeing....More

Seeing Takahe birds was wonderful. Sad to see how endangered they are, so grateful for this chance to see them. It is a free attraction, open from dawn to dusk so do not miss it if you are in the area....

Read the reviews and decided to go even though it wasn’t feeding time, which seemed to be optimum. Still saw all the birds including the takahe and morepork and spent a happy hour and a half there. Fantastic backdrop of the lake and mountains and...More

We found the bird sanctuary after a 30 minute walk along side the picturesque Lake Manapouri from the Te Anau town centre. The sanctuary looks after a small number of injured and/or endangered native birds with informative boards telling their individual stories. It is free...More

This is a lovely bird sanctuary right at the edge of town. We were able to view native birds that are hard to spot in the wild and each aviary had informative signage. It is free, and easy to walk around in a short amount...More

This is a free place to visit and see some of the rare New Zealand birds you might not otherwise see such as Takahe. It is a short walk (around the lake) from the town or you can easily drive and it is definately worth...More
