There are only 300 remaining existing Kahake birds in the world (they were thought extinct) and you can see two of them here. It is free, it is very close--don't miss them!

The Te Anau bird sanctuary is a must see when visiting Lake Te Anau. The DOC person was informative and helpful, she made the visit well worth while. A great hour.

Just outside of town it's worth a quick look. They have four takahe - there are only about 350 left in the world. It's by donation, so cheap and worth 30 minutes of your time.

It was so cool to spend a bit of time in the pen learning about the Takahe, this place is doing an awesome job trying to assist in building the numbers back up.
