We saw the ad in the visitors' center as we entered Te Anau to watch the Takahe be fed at 9:30 a.m. every day. It didn't say where, so back at the visitors' center we were directed down the road 2-3 miles to the bird...More

The walk from the visitors center to the sanctuary is long and boring. The cages are poorly maintained with few birds and no explanations or details to help learn of the project or the different species.

Stumbled across this little gem while walking with the children. Amazing that we got to see a Takahe, once thought to be extinct. No charge to visit here and lots of birds to see and interact with. Also had an informative talk from one of...More

The weather was so good when we were there, the walk from the car park to the sanctuary was pleasant and easy. The walk took about 20 minutes. We saw the very rare and beautiful takahe, kaka and native ducks. Love it!

This Sanctuary is run by DOC and is suffering from lack of funding - they could do so much more. The takahe are thriving and look happy and healthy. Not many other birds and some like the morepork not keen to be seen in the...More

Looking for a natural experience and an opportunity to help NZ's wildlife, then come here and donate. The kea parrots and Wilsie the yakking duck are quite funny.

Was very cool seeing Takahe birds at this sanctuary. This is a great little attraction for everyone and is totally it is worth the gold coin donation to see what was a once thought to be extinct bird!
