Highly recommend Phil as a sea kayak guide. Knows his stuff both about kayaking itself and knowledge of local wildlife. Absolutely ideal way to go out and around Stewart Island and see some cool things! Clearly a really nice guy with excellent chat 😃.

I rather unfortunately managed to get seasick, clearly I'm not meant to be on the waves, no matter how gentle they may be. Many people seem to think I might be the first person to get seasick in a kayak...

Anyway, Phil was so compassionate and caring - I really appreciated how he adapted the tour to my (slightly pathetic) needs, so I could have a good sit down while the others went back out to finish the tour.

Despite my nausea, it was a top experience and I'd highly recommend Phil to anyone going out to Rakiura and thinking of getting some kayaking on the go.

Had a fantastic morning kayaking with Phil. The scenery and wildlife are of course wonderful but Phil made the trip with his knowledge, humour and home baked cheese scones! We saw plenty of wildlife from brittle stars and sea cucumbers to penguins and sea lions, but Phil additionally told us about the seaweeds and plants and local history of the area. The kayaks are very comfortable and stable and Phil provided all the gear we needed. A must do part of any trip to Rakiura Stewart Island.

This was by far my favourite experience on Stewart island! Phil was a fantastic guide, so knowledgable about the local area and wildlife, as well as being really friendly and enthusiastic. We saw penguins, sea-lions and plenty of sea-birds. Definitely the best way to see Stewart island!

I’m a 52yr old, very causally fit, school teacher scared of deep water. I spent the morning kayaking with Phil who was incredibly kind and knowledgeable. His instructions and kit were spot on and my husband and 14 year old had a total blast. It was stunning to be up close to wildlife like we were and at times genuinely very moving. This would be up in the top ten things I’ve done in my life. Phil shared places with us that included views of unique birds, sea life and plants both land and aquatic. It was a very special experience and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. I wish I could bring my whole class to enjoy this wonderful experience with Phil who was great to talk with and shared so much about the environment. We were so lucky to go. Thank you! Great communication with Phil in booking process and pick up. His easy, relaxed manner and intimate local knowledge of the history, wildlife and geography was excellent. Safety was 100% a priority and He was very reassuring to a nervous lady. We saw nesting shags, oyster catchers, sea horse, rare underwater sea pod creatures and a sea lion swam up to us. Pristine waters and amazing scenery...loved it..thanks Phil

I can't recommend Phil's Sea Kayak highly enough! Phil is so knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife on and around the islands and the history of the area. We saw so many amazing birds and spent about 30 minutes with a sea lion cavorting around our kayak! The time flew by and we loved every minute of it. If you're thinking of trying sea kayaking Phil is the man to take you.

We had an absolutely spectacular experience. Phil collected us and returned us to our accommodation, the equipment was in excellent condition, he was good fun to be with and shared his knowledge of the local history and the sea life. We felt safe and comfortable. We had such a wonderful experience we're planning on going back to Stewart Island with friends to go kayaking with Phil again.

We loved kayaking as a family with Phil. He was very careful to check the weather and ensure the conditions would be suitable for taking our five year old. We were lucky to see penguins, sea lions on the sand and playing in the water, sea urchins, star fish, kelp forests, birds and gorgeous views of the islands. Phil was extremely friendly and experienced. This was a highlight of our trip to Stewart Island!

Absolutely loved our kayaking experience with Phil. In our 60’s & on a windy day Phil gave us every confidence that we were safe & would manage the trip, which we did. He was generous & informative, the kayaks were great & all the necessary gear is provided, can’t recommend enough & I’m looking forward to getting out again on a return trip to Stewart Island, Evelyn & Kerry
