Stewart Island: Village and Bays Tour

16 reviews
Explore the unspoiled bays of Stewart Island — known to the Maoris as Rakiura — on a minibus tour with a knowledgeable local guide. Starting from Oban village, your narrated tour covers Lee Bay, Halfmoon Bay and Horseshoe Bay. Stop for photo ops of Paterson Inlet from Observation Rock, and hop off the vehicle for short walks along the 90-minute route.
US$35.85 per adult

I spent the whole day over on the island, just wandering the tracks at a slow pace, taking my time. I saw plenty of bird life and used the guide ($2) to do a self-tour. Sadly I did not see any Kiwi, but managed to see all the other birds in the guide. If it is raining, one does not get very wet in under the forest canopy which is where 98% of the tracks go.

Easy tracks, well signposted, nice boat trip over. You can take the ferry, or pay a little more and get the faster, smaller water taxi - both are good options.

We went on a guided tour with RuggedyRange. The island is a wonderful place to visit. Buy a bird guide book- it helps a lot. You can just do your own visit or a structured tour (like we did). Recommend a half day and in the afternoon
