My partner and I went on a kiwi spotting visit with Furhana in the last week of Jan. 2024. We started at 21:30. 1 hour of a presentation (very educational, Furhana knows her material on the kiwi in and out!), then 2 hours in search of the kiwi. It was a small group, 5 visitors (by contrast, we were with 16 other people on a kiwi spitting tour a couple of days before). Furhana gave precise instructions on what was allowed or advisable and what not during the tour. You may think it has spoilt the fun, but to the contrary, Furhana made sure we all had a perfect view of two separate kiwi birds sometimes as close as 1 meter away from us or even closer! Thank you, Furhana. Dear visitors, go Rugged Ranger! Highly recommended.

Furhana guided us on multiple trips during our week on Rakiura/ Stewart Island. All of which were well organised and throughly enjoyable. As a guide Furhana has extensive knowledge on local history, flora and fauna. We all learnt a heap! We saw and experienced much more than we would have by ourselves. With over 25 years guiding on SI Furhana ensures you have experiences that will be a highlight of your trip.

Furhana is an excellent tour leader with a lot of knowledge of everything of this area. We did the Ulva Island Tour, pelagic cruise and the kiwi night spotting tour. All of them highly professional, very considerate for the wildlife and on a plus side we saw almost all rare birds including the Kiwi. Highly recommend her

Arrived off the ferry super excited for our trip only to be greeted by the rudest, pushiest and most abrupt woman I have ever met. It really ruined the start of our holiday. I would stay as far away as possible from this company. We tried to make a complaint to the ferry company but the staff member I spoke to said we needed to make a complaint to the police. Luckily, we managed to find a lovely guide to take us on our trip to Ulva with another company which saved our holiday.

Hi Steven - We go to the ferry terminal on a daily basis to hand out our brochures on as many days as we can and have been doing so for the past two decades with great feedback from visitors - who would not have been told about our tours and services had we not and, who have throughly enjoyed their time with us - otherTrip Advisor comments will testify to this. As a long standing tourism operator who's has spent a significant amount of money on advertising and marketing and whose clients also travel on the ferry - we believe that we have every right to hand out brochures to visitors on arrival. This is an opportunity anyone can take up. No one has ever made a statement like you have about our presence at the ferry arrival and I am startled by your feedback. I can categorically say - we are not pushy or rude to visitors - we offer information and choices to people because there is no independent information centre in Stewart Island, despite the ferry company directing ferry passengers to their booking office called the Red Shed or advertising their booking office as the Oban Visitor Centre. Despite being less than 5 minutes walk away. our Booking Office is not seen by many and is blocked off by competitor vehicles, therefore, we welcome people on arrival, give out our brochures and street maps to show visitors how to find us and we leave it at that. We are handing out information for only a short time. We then head back to our own Booking Office. Again this is an opportunity that anyone can take up. We live in small community and you will not be aware of the dynamics nor the interests of the person you spoke with at the ferry company or elsewhere and how people will only recommend their friends / associates / families or who may themselves be personally working for multiple competitors. We give people choices and cannot see the benefit of of being pushy or rude - we wouldn't have survived in business this long if we were. I have followed up your complaint with the ferry company's manager in Stewart Island and have talked with other staff and was informed they know nothing about it. We are truly disappointed at the suggestion given to you by a member of the ferry company and, what you are now advising visitors to do. We have also checked out your review for the guided tour you went on - which was in fact the ferry company's tour to Ulva Island. We will ensure that we continue to do our very best in all that we do and are grateful that we are appreciated and valued by so many people whom we have met on arrival and come on our tours. Best wishes - Furhana

I went on the Kiwi Spotting tour with Furhana. She's well-knowledgeable and conservation-minded. It was an extremely special experience seeing a Kiwi bird in the wild and also learning to approach them respectfully. I walked away with a greater appreciation for the conservation of this species.

Thank you for your review and letting us know what you thought about your experience. Our way of supporting conservation is to foster a greater appreciation through the information we provide and by how we run our tours. Our wildlife deserve this and our kiwi especially because of their unique qualities. They are easily disturbed and frightened and we want our visitors to learn how to take care around them. Thank you for coming on our tour. Best wishes - Furhana

My family and I went on the Ulva Island tour with Furhana - what an amazing experience!! Ulva island is a magical place, and it came alive with the incredible knowledge and nuance of our wonderful guide Furhana. It's not to be missed - I would very highly recommend!
Ruggedy Range tours is the right choice for you if:
- You want to fully experience the environment beyond just walking through the natural beauty.
- You're interested in learning about the flora, fauna, or both! Furhana is so knowledgeable, and also conscientious that some of us were really into hearing all the information and some weren't - she balanced that beautifully without ever disturbing the sense of tranquility.
- You prefer a tour that feels more intimate. This is not one of those giant cruise boat tours where someone vaguely familiar with the area leads a noisy ever-moving group while pointing out a few items of interest - this is a small group setting with a guide who lives and breathes this place and is passionate about sharing it with you. Furhana ensures that each person gets the best possible experience each step of the way.
Thank you so much Furhana!! We already want to come back to Stewart Island and we'll undoubtedly be coming to you for our next adventure!

We joined Furhana's kiwi spotting experience and were very impressed by her knowledge, passion and commitment to the protection of kiwi on Stewart Island. We were educated on the use of red lights and how to approach and watch kiwi respectfully. We felt privileged to have seen kiwis completely wild in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to spot four kiwi and loved our experience with Ruggedy Range!

We have just finished an Ulva Island visit and a guided tramp on the Rakiura Great Walk with Furhana. Brilliant trips, highly recommended. Furhana's knowledge of birds, bush and local history is remarkable. The tramp was made so much richer with her guiding, showing us places off the track we wouldn't have found ourselves and pointing out features of interest. The food was excellent and we were absolutely spoiledby the generous hosting by Furhana and Natasha.
