Ferry Service
May 2021 • Couples
Overall good experience and friendly staff except the lady who sold us tickets being a bit cold. Politely asked her to recommend a few places for viewing kiwis/penguins and whether we can walk to the lighthouse by foot. She seemed to dodge our questions. Not sure why. Thought we would disturb kiwis/penguins? We never got too close. One very positive thing is asking questions online and getting friendly reply very soon.

Easy to get to Ulva Island
Apr 2021
This is the cheapest and friendliest way to get across to Ulva Island. Captain Peter is a lovely operator of this vessel and gives an insight into the surrounding areas.

Nice relaxed ferry trip
Apr 2021 • Couples
Cool laid back trip to Ulva on the vintage ferry. Not as fast as a water taxi, but only takes 15mins! Gives much more opportunity to take in the sights and wildlife- seen two penguins from the boat. Pete the skipper is really friendly and happy to offer advice.

Ulva Island Our Way
Mar 2021
I highly recommend Ulva Island Ferry. I'm sure the other tours to Ulva island are lovely, as they provide a tour guide, but we just didn't want to spend $100+ each. At $20 each, it was a great deal AND we can choose how long we can explore the island since they do drop-offs / pick-ups every 2 hours.

They accept EFTPOS at the dock, give you a lovely "ticket" that's a leaf, and then safely glide you across the way for 10-15 min with a good description of what to expect on the island.

I thought 2 hours may be too short, and 4 hours too long, but in the end 4 hours wasn't long enough! We loved doing all the trails on the island, and if I could do it again, I would've packed a lovely picnic and stayed there for 6 hours, or arranged to have their water taxi pick us up at a given time (very reasonably price water taxi, too)

So definitely check them out for a day at Ulva, completely worth it.

Must do on Stewart island: a water-taxi tour with Rakiura!!!
Feb 2021
Rakiura, named after the island, runs the water taxi service and we highly recommend organizing a tor with him. Over 2 h he took us to see albatross and mouton birds around small islands. We then spent 15mn with a group of 4 seals that were having a lot of fun chasing the boats... Rakiura knows them well and knows what works with them. He finally dropped us on Ulva island and picked us up about 1h30 later... a must do on Stewart Island!!!

Excellent service

Rakiura, the skipper, did a number of drop offs and pick ups for us while we were on the island including our freshwater landing pick up and my snorkeling trip.
He’s obviously experienced, safety conscious and caring. Between them the different companies work together and it feels like they know the whereabouts of every visitor to the island and are looking out for them (which apparently is true - it’s like hanging out with unobtrusive extended family).
I’d recommend ulva Island ferries for your trip to the island but also for all your other water taxi needs. Flexible, accommodating and friendly.

Leaf ticket
Jan 2021 • Couples
We had a wonderful time going over to Ulva Island on the boat. It was a little chilly so the skipper came around and gave everyone a blanket. Lovely touch. Takes less than ten minutes to get across from Golden Bay to Ulva Island. Your ticket is a leaf with the name of the ferry written on it. Would definitely use this company. It costs just twenty dollars return.

A great day's outing
Jan 2021 • Couples
The Ulva Island ferry costs $20 return and leaves from Golden Bay wharf on a regular basis [I believe about 4 times daily]; returning from Past Office Bay about 15 minutes later. Enjoyable trip and a knowledgeable and skilled skipper.

Great time
Dec 2020 • Friends
Really enjoyed our ferry crossing and trip over to ulva island. The ferry runs every 2 hours, which is great (we spent 4 hours on the island). The ferry itself was pleasant and the operator really friendly and have us blankets for the trip
