About
While Queenstown is generally done at full pace, Onsen Hot Pools takes a step back to let you take in the beauty of the surroundings and simply relax. With uninterrupted views across the Shotover Canyon, our Cedar Hot Tubs are heated to 37.8C on warmer days and up to 39.8C during the winter and can accommodate up to four adults. Our natural setting is matched by the pure water captured on its endless journey between the sky and earth to continually fill and refresh the pools. With complimentary transport to and from Queenstown, Onsen Hot Pools is relaxation the natural way.

- Amerson1Brisbane, Australia117 contributionsA bucket list experienceVisited with my 20 something son. We were collected by their courtesy bus in Queenstown (very handy as we didn't have a car). Really enjoyed our hour in the pool overlooking the Shotover River, with complementary drink (hot chocolate as the day was cold and rainy) & snack.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2023
- DexterCullenIreland152 contributionsNice experienceA visit to the Onsen pools is on every 'must do' list for Queenstown. We went at night and the peace and starry sky were lovely. The girls working there were very nice. I'm just not sure it lives up to the major hype it receives. It is a lovely experience though. Book well in advance and the parking is limited and tight so beware!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 July 2023
- Taylah LNewcastle, Australia33 contributionsBeautiful and something romanticThis is a beautiful and relaxing spa. They played tranquil music whilst we looked over the valley. We had the 6pm booking where we could still see the mountains and river until the sun went down completely and we could then stargaze. Note you only got about 50 minutes in the pool as they use this time for you to get dressed.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2023
- David CSamford, Australia489 contributionsMagnificent views, nice warm bath.Stunning views, quite relaxing, but really just a very expensive hot tub. Four of us went, I am glad we went but on our next trip there would be no need for us to visit again. The tubs were clean, views magnificent, the nibbles were very small, wine was good. There are showers in the tub area so you can get changed as well as changing room facilities. Very busy. Be prepared for 4 or 5 flights of stairs (Or slope) to get down to the spa. Then you have to climb them on way out!!!!!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2023
- Connector207014821503 contributionsA good experienceThe onsen is something that you must do when you visit queenstown. Highly recommend the original spa, you are fully informed by reception and by the guide leading you to the spa. The body soap provided smelt great. The door is only partly frosted, so does pay to be mindful of this when getting ready. The main sign on the road needs attention as it's very small and hard to see as you come around the corner. The carpark itself is well signed.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023

Onsen hot pools deserves more stars than 5. This is the 2nd time I’ve been here but the 1st time experiencing the ultimate relaxation package. We also celebrated a birthday and the extra special attention to detail of the staff at Onsen needs to be commended. We enjoyed the most relaxing experience for the 45min soak and then a 1 hour hot stone massage. Nothing comes close to the beautiful scenery, exclusivity and feeling of wellness you have when leaving this special place. I will go to Onsen on every trip to Queenstown forever. It’s worth the money. Book well in advance to ensure you get to experience this amazing place.

If you are like me, retreats, massages and spas are not what comes to mind first for a holiday. My parents wanted to get massages at Nugget Point Hotel and since this place was next door, I booked a session to pass the wait time. The experience was better than I expected. The view was absolutely amazing and staff and services were great. I learnt I can enjoy chilling in the hot tub and the hour definitely went by faster than I wanted. Though not the cheapest, the price is definitely not prohibitive and quite reasonable for the upkeep and view. Though retreats and spas remain not my kind of holiday, I can't deny I had a great time soaking in the tub, admiring the view and thinking I might just do this again one day =).

What an amazing place. From the moment you arrive you feel calm and relaxed. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. After a quick wait were escorted to our bath. On entering we all had one word...WOW. The view was stunning. Sitting in the spa and enjoying a drink, it was so hard not to relax. The facilities were clean and tidy. I would highly recommend this as a must when visiting Queenstown when you need to get away and relax.

Wow wow wow - we loved our experience at onsen hot pools. The views from the room were amazing and the whole process from check in to departure was easy and seamless. Would highly recommend booking some time at their onsen pools to end a long day, regardless if you hiked or not.

Amazing surroundings and fantastic service.
The soak was so relaxing, I felt amazing. I really enjoyed the little touches, the candles and refreshments.
My hot stone massage afterwards was the perfect end to the experience, I didn’t want to leave!

In search of a relaxing time before our long flight back home, we arranged for an appointment right at opening so we could have time to enjoy the pools and massage treatment. What a treat!
When our flight got unexpectedly moved earlier, the team was so helpful in adjusting our soak time (letting us in early & shortening the time a bit) so we could still enjoy a full massage. A really nice experience and great way to wind down from a busy trip.

Visited with my boyfriend to start a romantic date day. It was wonderful. We had a relaxing time. The bath was warm with different options and relaxing music. You get drink snd snack included. The views were breathtaking. The staff was very welcoming and helpful and nothing was too much of a problem for them.
Cleanliness was very good with everything looking clean and tidy and all pool are cleaned throughly between guests. Free towels are provided and there are ample changing facilities with all the essentials.
Overall a fantastic experience and highly recommended.

From the website:
• For our Original Onsen and Outdoor Onsen pools the water is constantly refreshed with 1.5 litres of water per minute exiting the pool and 1.5 litres of fresh water being added.
• Each pool is electronically monitored at one second intervals as the water rotates between the pool and filtration system. The electronics compare the ideal readings to the actual readings and adjust as necessary.
• As the water circulates, it passes through a sand filter and a UV unit and then if required a small dose of bromine is added as a final disinfectant.
• In addition, a staff member undertakes manual pool tests four times a day as a back up to the electronic system.
• The shared facilities are also cleaned on the hour or approx. 10 times each day
•The smaller, private Serenity Soak oval tubs offered to our day spa guests are emptied, cleaned and re-filled with fresh water for each new booking but in keeping with our environmental responsibilities, we limit the number of bookings for these hot tubs each day.
I can’t decide between the Ultimate experience or Serenity soak. What does everyone recommend? Thank you

Hi,
We are planning to do the hot pools early April. What time would be best to book to see the sunset this time of year?
Thank you!

Hi, book earler as very popular.
Not sure hiw the sun seta as you are looking southetly across the shotover flats. Hence will only see shadows, not the sun below the ranges in the valley.
Chances are you may not get to choose such a speciic time.
But sure you'll enjoy. Just ask spa...

Should I make reservation at day time or night time? When will the best time slot for that ? I will be in Queenstown in mid December. thanks

Hey,
That's a tricky one! We think it is equally amazing both day time and evening, our most popular session is our sunset experience. In the day time you get to experience the amazing views over the shotover canyon, however in the evening you can relax under the stars.
We hope this helps you decide.
Sincerely
The Onsen Team
