I spent a great day travelling off the beaten track with guide, Martin Kohn, on a photography tour in the Queenstown area. As no-one else had booked for the day I had chosen, I went for the one-one-one tour option. This was a bit dearer and I baulked a little at the cost, but in the end thought it was the best value activity I undertook whilst in New Zealand. Martin collected me from my hotel at 9am and we headed out of Queenstown, stopping for photos at a number of spots as we drove along the eastern shore of Lake Wakatipu. These were not places the average tourist would visit and at least one involved climbing a fence and scrambling down a bank to a photogenic stream. And this sums up the day: the opportunity to learn more about photography while getting your feet dirty (and later in the day, almost blown off the same feet by the wind)! After a quick bite to eat in a village, we then headed up into the Hector Mountains and down into the Nevis Valley for more great photographic opportunities. On the return journey down the mountain, the light in the valley below was so good, we kept stopping for more photos. Martin was extremely flexible with the itinerary and a patient, knowledgeable teacher. While my day was pretty physical, this was exactly how I liked it. Just talk to Martin about what YOU want to achieve and I'm sure you'll have as good a day as I did. By the way, I really want to go back in winter!!
