This was a wonderful tour, well run by Air Milford, who did a superb job. The flight to Milford Sound was spectacular, with amazing views of the broader area around Queenstown that you just wouldn't get by driving or taking the bus. We buzzed snow-capped mountains and flew over incredible valleys and waterfalls.
The aircraft they use are Cessna Caravans, with excellent views all round.
The ferry trip on the Sound itself was very good, with a special area for the Air Milford guests on the vessel. I imagine all the tour providers take a similar route near waterfalls, seals and out into the ocean, before returning again through this truly spectacular landscape. I had no idea it would be this grand and amazing - mountains rising 1000 feet straight out of the fjord.
Our flight back to Queenstown took us over even more amazing scenery, where we could see the cirque of Lake Quill with the stunning Sutherland Falls, which has to be one of the most amazing waterfalls Ive ever seen, tumbling almost 2000 feet down the mountainside. Then we flew over the bright blue Lake Erskine, perched thousands of feet in the mountains. Spectacular indeed!
The flight then took us over Lake Wakatipu, landing at Queenstown airport. All of this undertaken in the morning until just after lunchtime, including transfers to and from our hotel.
It beats the whole day on a bus and you get to see so much more. It's not cheap, but it is just amazing and, like a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon or Manhattan, worth going the extra mile in your holiday spending.

Awesome event! The flight with the small plane over the beautiful landscape is already a highlight, so worth to choose the flight instead of the bus. Boat cruise at Milford Sound was just awesome. Fantastic nature, great team and we have seen a lot of dolphins that day as well. Just a perfect day with sunny weather.

We definitely agree that taking in the spectacular scenery from above with a one way flight time of 35mins compared to the one way drive time of 4hrs is a no brainer.

This excursion was the highlight of our 3 week vacation! From the moment we were picked up from our hotel to the moment we were dropped off, it was SO. MUCH. FUN.
Can't say enough about how awesome this day was. Our pilot, Hank, was tremendous. He was not only super friendly, he educated us, guided us, took pictures with us, took us on a short hike..just fantastic! If you're thinking about doing a bus tour or this, this is the way to go! The flight was a blast, with only 9 people an intimate group..scenery can't be beat, and only half an hour to get to Milford Sound, as opposed to 4 hrs on a bus. It's a no-brainer.

An outstanding experience with pilot Antony Sproull, who very gracefully let me fly in the co-pilot seat and answered a barrage of questions about the aircraft, the flight, and VFR. The weather was good, so we were able to take a slightly longer route. After a long bus ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound, the experience of a short flight back with a dramatic take-off and landing plays with your sense of scale of the geography. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for anyone without a pilot's license.

Our pilot, Antony Sproull is part of this family run business and his love of the area and flying shone through. It’s hard to describe the amazing experience of flying so close to the alps and cruising Milford Sound. We saw seals and a penguin on this gorgeous day.

Had the most wonderful day on Sunday! After 45 years of living in Queenstown, I finally got to visit Milford Sound!
Thanks to the awesome team at Air Milford, my daughter Toni and I did a fly-cruise-fly on the most beautiful calm clear day. Ants was our pilot, flying us in Hank’s precious vintage Cessna Skywagon.
The views defy description and we flew so close to the mountains that it felt like we could reach out and touch them.
We caught the Southern Discoveries cruise on a fabulous boat that wasn’t too big and wasn’t too small. Not crowded, great commentary and tasty lunch.
Flew back to Queenstown on a different flight path to the trip over and Ants was explaining what we were viewing the whole trip.
What a Bucket List trip!!!
My heartfelt thanks to Destination Queenstown, for organising the trip as a retirement gift, and Air Milford and Southern Discoveries for the unforgettable experience!

My recent experience with Air Milford, facilitated through GreatSights tour operator, unfolded as a frustrating scenario of conflicting information and customer disappointment. The cancellation of the flight back option from Milford Sound to Queenstown was attributed to a purported weather issue. Mind you—there was no issue with the weather on that day. Two other flight operators, True South and Milford Scenic Flights, were fully functional in the same weather conditions. Their pilots were even trying to help us to see if they have spots available on their flight back. But Air Milford were nowhere to be found at the cruise terminal.
So if you would like to continue with the uncertainty of your flights and utter disregard for your booking and cancellations of all other plans of the evening, then I definitely recommend booking Air Milford and GreatSights as their booking partner.

Due to being in a fixed wing aircraft we are unable to land on any glaciers as landing strips are not available, however you would certainly see these when flying to and from Milford Sound.

We recommend that guests book in for their first available day in Queenstown, so that, should the weather be unfavourable for flying on the first day, they would have the flexibility to roll on to a following fine weather day.

We use taxis to collect our guests from their centrally located Queenstown accommodation. In New Zealand, infants are required to have their own seat in a car, however taxis have a special dispensation, as they are considered public transport and so are not required to carry/use car seats.
So, if you would like a car seat for your infant in the taxi, rather than have them sit on your lap, you will either need to provide one. Or, when you book direct with us on our website, in the comments section make it clear that you need a car seat for a 2year olds, so that we can pre-book this for you, please note there will be an extra charge of NZ$20.

Hi! Can you please tell me the difference between the fly, cruise, fly option and the fly, nature cruise, fly option? Also it seems there is an option to take a bus one way, then cruise then fly but i am not seeing it on the website. Also I am seeing a noon option described but again not seeing that on the website. Lastly, which of these besides the 8am option includes food? I am coming to Queenstown with my son in 2 weeks (end of October, beginning of November and would love to take this trip ! Thank you

Thank you for your questions.
The Scenic cruises the fiord for 1hr 45mins (on our 08.00am departure) and 1hr 30mins (on our 10.00am departure) and the Nature cruises for 2hrs (on our 12.00noon departure) and 1hr 45mins (on our 02.00pm departure), although both cruises take the same route thought the Fiord and stop at the same locations.
The main difference between the two boats is the size of the vessel. The Scenic Cruise has a capacity of 300 guests, whereas the Nature Cruise has a capacity of 150 guests.
The other difference to note is the Nature orientated emphasis of the Nature Cruise. Onboard there are two wilderness guides, who give a full commentary about the fiord’s wildlife, history, fauna and flora. In contrast, the commentary aboard the Scenic Cruise is done by the skipper, with guides aboard the vessel to answer questions.
If you go to the Half-Day Milford Sound Nature Cruise and Flight from Queenstown excursion page, there are two times to select from for our summer departures, 1200 noon and 0200 pm.
The excursion including the coach is called Milford Sound Day Trip from Queenstown by Coach, Cruise and Flight. I am sorry that you are having trouble finding them but if you search those exact titles, they should come up
Regarding food, the 0800 am includes a complimentary buffet breakfast, the 1200 noon includes a buffet lunch and the 0200 pm includes a complimentary beverage. The 1000 am does not include any food or beverages.

I would like to book the fly/cruise/fly option to Milford Sound but am nervous about weather cancellations as we will only be in Queenstown 2 days. If we book the fly/cruise/fly what are the chances of getting on a coach/cruise tour the next day is the weather is not good?

Because of the weather dependent nature of flying over the Southern Alps and into Fiordland, we defiantly recommend, as you have suggested, to book in for your first available day. So that you have a back up day, should the weather be inclement on the first day.
May I ask how many people are in your party and also what time of year you are looking to travel? Because at most times of the year, there will be no problem finding seats on a coach the day before departure, however at peak times, this is not the case.

Yes, on the Milford Sound Coach/Cruise/Fly excursion, the coach trip takes in multiple (usually 4) scenic stops and short walks en-route to Milford Sound. The most notable are the Mirror Lakes and The Chasm, which are both short scenic walks.
