I am a fly fisherman from South Africa where I have met xpert fly fisherman and have been to a few very good fly shops but I must say that Stu's Fly shop has been my very best experiance. This store stocks absolutely every piece of equipment a fly fisherman's heart desires from a range of rods and reels to... More

Travelling from Scotland for the last few years to fish in New Zealand I came to realise that fishing in NZ shows up all the faults in your casting technique that you may get away with back home. NZ is technical - the ever present wind, casting heavy nymphs to get down etc. I booked a half day casting instruction... More

With some doubts of what to expect from an unorthodox and perhaps larger than life character, per his web persona, I booked a day with Stu. In hindsight I can only apologise for these doubting thoughts for I cannot praise Stu enough for the day we shared together, fishing a remote river in a very high hidden back country valley.... booked a days guiding on a whim after 10 years of fishing in NZ with out a guide, was very dubious that i would get much out it as i have never had any trouble catching fish. however i quickly realised the benefit of spending a day with stu, he tuned up my casting, which stood me in great stead... Called in on our way to Milford Sound but Stu was out teaching and we were served by Matt his assistant. Great shop with a massive selection of flies. Called back in on our return to Queenstown and met Stu an affable guy who knows his stuff. If you are fishing the area I highly recommend a visit.

Great shop for those addicted to fly. Large fly range and lots of suitable gear for the many local rivers. Quirky and cottage based. A true mecca for Southland fly fishers and good cheer and knowledge for Stu.

Even if you are not an angler, this shop is well worth a visit. Amazingly crafted flies, fabulous memorabilia and a warm welcoming chat from Stu. This man certainly has talent. If you are a fly fisher like me, you will have landed in paradise :)

On the 15th March I returned with a friend to fish with Stu Tripney. This would be the fourth or fifth (or could be more) times we've fished with Stu and he didn't disappoint (he never has). I see that Stu could be quite a polarising character, for me I am firmly on the side of being a huge fan... More

We've been using Stu for many years now but each time it just seems to get better and better! It's always so much fun and that's what it's all about after all! Stu would have to be one of the best spotters of trout in Southland and we always find plenty to cast at, not all are caught but that's... More
