While the official NZL websites list this as easy-moderate, in the winter it is definitely NOT. Going up to the saddle is ok but after that to the summit, it gets really though, at times going through knee deep snow on the track. Bring plenty...More

After paying $40 for a 5 minute gondola ride to the start of the trail I was feeling a little ripped off (I have reviewed the gondola separately) but luckily the trail was worth the trip. Did the first 4km & it is fairly easy...More

I started the climb at the base of the cable car, walking up to the viewing platform, and then moving off up through the trees onto the Ben Lomond track proper. The first part twists and turns up through the trees, and is at times...More

The day before we had done Roy's Peak in Wanaka, which on that day had become my favourite ever hike. The next day it was beaten by Ben Lomond. 5 hour hike if you get the (ridiculously expensive $40) gondola up, 7 hour if not....More

This track is very physically demanding for me but I have done it anyway. You can take Tiki trail or skyline gondola alternatively. But the hiking this track will be more interesting.

Stunning views once you get to the top! Once you reach the saddle it looks quite daunting to get to the summit, but it is SO worth it. It took us 5 hours, about 2 to get up and a bit longer coming down as...More

So amazing! But be warned, this is a challenging trek even if DOC lists it as easy! Make sure you have warm clothes, appropriate footwear, snacks and plenty of water. We went up in May 2018 and there was plenty of ice and snow at...More

We decided to get the gondola part way up to save 500m ascent as we'd done a lot of steep hikes in the week before and wanted to save our legs! The trail is well marked from there, and is easy to follow. The elevation...More
