- MattStLondon, United Kingdom306 contributionsTotally worthwhile easy hike - great outing from Queenstown.Moke Lake is a very pleasant, varied and scenic circular walk. It is on an excellent track of 6.2km with 108m of gentle elevation gain in total. It took us 2 hours at a gentle pace with stops to admire the great views. There are no rough parts but there is a boardwalk across a wetland which had a 20m section with a few cm of water when we did it in November (see photos) - so you need decent boots or get wet feet. To get there drive 7km out of Queenstown on the Glenorchy Road, turn right and drive for another 7km. The parking area is also a well equipped camp-site with toilets, washrooms and water taps. Total outing duration from Queenstown was 3.5 hours including drive and admiring the views.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 November 2023
- Steve BGold Coast, Australia206 contributionsA Photographers paradiseI was blessed with great weather & little to no wind & the reflections on the lake were beautiful. It’s just a short drive from Queenstown & honestly early is best. It’s a nice drive up but the last km or so is unsealed but no issue for any car. There’s a walking track around the whole lake that they say takes about 2.5 hrs but I didn’t bother as the sun was behind me for morning photos which is exactly what I wanted. There was also a trip from town that allowed you to go canoeing or another one does fishing which looked good. All in all it’s a must see.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 February 2024
- TonyC_Austin367 contributionsNice walk that is not too strenuous. We did the track around Moke Lake in about 2 hours, though probably went faster than most. A little elevation gain in places, but nothing too severe. We were there on a bright sunny day and it was very enjoyable.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2024

We were fortunate to visit Moke Lake on a fine calm day, so the reflections were spectacular. We did the walk round the lake, parking in the DOC campsite which has toilets. The walk took us under 2 hours and was a delight because we had views all the way round. Not far from Queenstown and well worth a visit.

We took 2 different day tours with Queenstown Black, our guide Hal took us first to Moke Lake after picking us up at our hotel on Monday morning. We were able to kayak with Queenstown Paddle all around the lake and then did a picnic lunch on the beach and a lovely hike at Bob's Cove. It was a super chill day with activity mixed in which we wanted. We would not have met Mackenzie with Queenstown Paddle or known of Moke Lake if not for our guide Hal who showed us an amazing time. Probably need to come back and hike on the trails in the area. It was a fun bonus that we went past a movie crew. They were filming a Netflix project called "War Machine" Exciting day in the QT area.

The ride to Moke Lake took a toll on our old camper, but the lake was worth the drive. We did the Moke lake walk and it was really nice. Easy walk but be careful with kids. You can also freedom camp here.

Very picturesque, was a still day and the reflections in the lake were amazing. Slight snow dusting on the peaks added to the beauty. Easy undulating walk, a little muddy in places so walking shoes or boots preferable.

This is a beautiful place to camp and stay the night. There are amazing sunrises here and super pretty landscape. You have to drive through some cow pastures, on a road, to get there but it is totally worth it. If the animals are on the road just keep moving slowly and they eventually move. The owners are super friendly and it is low cost. Best place to stay near Queenstown. We loved it so much we stayed here for 6 nights.

I don't want to shout about this place in case it gets popular, but at 20 minutes from town (if that), this is a great walk.
Around the Lake takes just over an hour if you are fast.
Beautiful landscape. Worth the trip

Absolutely stunning place, not to far on a gravel road to a beautiful doc site with a lake that so clear we had to swim in it. Cool but not freezing. Inviting place to camp so we will be back - need a little bug spray.

Can you park up and see the lake straight away or is it a long walk to see it? Not wanting to do a big hike but definitely want to stop in and see the lake
Written 5 October 2017
The lake is right beside the road.
Written 10 October 2017
Depends on the weather. Last night we had heavy rain so probably not because road will be muddy. And in winter road has ice.
But in the middle of dry weather you will probably be able to get through.
Note road is very narrow so cars coming towards you may struggle to get past. And you will possibly find it difficult to reverse out of their way because road is uneven and steering a caravan in reverse might be more unpredictable than usual.

Hi.Does Lake Moke is accessible via normal sedan car? Thanks in advance
Written 25 October 2016
For the majority of the year a normal sedan will be fine. Don't drive it during the winter if there is snow & ice without having snow chains.
Enjoy the drive up to the lake as much as the lake it's self.
