Bike hire to cycle Walter Peak to Mossburn, then to Athol the following day and transport from Athol to Queenstown. Bikes were great. Well maintained, accessories as required. Van to travel in very comfy. Mike was awesome to deal with. Nothing was a problem and he coped with my many changes in what our group needed or wanted as I sorted our dates/ itinerary. Loved his local knowledge and his stories. Felt like we were in the company of an old friend.

We completed the Around the Mountain cycle trip over the last 4 x days. Mike runs a tidy ship when it comes to organising a trip. We took his suggestion and spent two nights in Te Anau, completing the Lake to Lake trail (Manipouri to Te Anau) on day 2. Our accomodation in Te Anau was outstanding (Lakeside motels and apartments).

Day 1. Was a beautiful spin across the lake to Walter peak. It’s a lovely meander through until Von Hill, which is a mother… need I say more. If you can be bothered getting up the hill from the collection shelter to Mavora lakes, it’s worth the effort.

Day 2. Lake to Lake is a lovely trip. Mike colleague Peter, collected us and took us out to Manipouri and we meandered back.

Day 3. Centre Hill to Lumsden has some really wonderful sections. Of particular interest is the first part to Mossburn. From Mossburn to Lumsden is somewhat straight and flat, but with a trail this size and knowing it follows an old train line, it can’t all be switchbacks and hairpin bends. Lumsden is quirky and the accomodation is a bit of a hoot (I’m really glad we didn’t stay on Halloween… it’s a wee bit spooky).

Day 4. Lumsden to Kingston. This is the biggest day we did km wise. But was well punctuated with little towns offering a delightful array of coffee and baked goods. It’s lovely to get a wee bit of downhill on the way into Kingston.

This is a really great trip and has a similar level of services to what the Central Otago rail trail had when it first started. Hopefully more people will use the trail and visit these small towns and see the beautify scenery.

Thanks Mike and team 🙌

Great trip. Comfortable bike. Take care not to use your battery too much at beginning of each ride so it lasts. First day hardest (Vonn Hill). Don’t stay in Lumsden…
Mike did a great job of organising us. I’d do it all again (but skip Lumsden as an overnight stop)

11 friends really enjoyed this ride Around the Mountains in great weather. Mike's service with comfortable shuttles and baggage transfer was excellent. They were on time and also flexible to change times as suited us. We appreciated the care taken with our e-bikes on the trailer including covers to protect them from dust on the ride from Mavora to Te Anau. Mike's recommendation to have 2 nights in Te Anau and ride the Lake to Lake trail to Manapouri was a highlight. Our accommodation in Te Anau was good and as expected but in Lumsden was not up to scratch. We'd recommend checking Lumsden accommodation out for yourself. This ride is highly recommended by our group.

Booked this trail through Mike. Can’t thank him enough for sorting this for us. Very flexible. He managed to accommodate an extra person on the trip the day before we left. And was happy to change shuttle times to suit us.
The biking itself was great. Beautiful scenery. Accomodation along the way was great. All shuttles were exactly on time.
So glad we took his advice and stayed Te Anau for two nights. The Lake to Lake trail to Manapouri was excellent.

My wife and I completed a number of bike rides and this one is right up there. We started from Kingston and biked to Mossburn. It’s quite an easy ride, mainly flat and some great views of the area. The last 15 km was really tough going into a howling westerly wind. We stayed at the Mossburn hotel which we fully recommend to anyone wanting to do this ride.
The second day was a very early start at 5:15 am, as we had a 1-15 sailing back to Queenstown. The first part to Centre Hill is very easy slightly downhill all the way. But from Centre hill to the mavora Lakes turn off has to be one of the hardest we have done. It was raining and into a wind all the way. The second 50 km, is slightly uphill with a good downhill going into Walter Peak.
I always check reviews, feedback for any info I can find on any bike rides that we are looking at doing. Our experience on the service provider is no different.
My suggestion, if you want a hassle free, helpful service contact the Publican/owner of the Mossburn hotel.I cannot recommend him enough on his helpfulness and how he went out of his way to help us.

A group of 11 friends out to enjoy Around the Mountains. We enjoyed the experience of the ride. Weather was great. Mike stuffed our Accommodation up. Had to book 2 nights ourselves in Te Anua because Lumsden Hotel was booked out. We have paid twice for 2 nights. He doesn't care about clients. Even people running the Bed and Breakfast accomodation. Certainly needs a Secretary. We are hoping we get our Money back but not holding our breath..
The bikes some of our group hired were in need of a good service.

We were a group of 7 cyclists who used ATM Mike Barnett for two day rides out of Queenstown and a four day ATM self guided tour starting in Kingston and ending at Walter Peak.
Mike was simply outstanding in everything he did - advice on ride content, securing clean well run accommodation, reliable shuttle and bag transfers for our group and was able to deliver reliable bikes and deal with last minute requests such as changing to e-bikes to enhance our overall enjoyment .
The 58kms ride from Mavora Lakes to Walter Peak is simply stunning as was our day ride out to Jacks Point.
If you’re planning rides out of Queenstown or plan on doing the Around The Mountain Trail there is only one person to go to and that is Mike Barnett!

Mike Barnett is excellent flexible coordinator -handled complications well when some of our party were majorily delayed by wind preventing planes landing, He came up with alternatives. He worked hard to get us on and off the track and gave plenty of advice re suitable accomodation and eating spots. Very pleasant chap .
Great 3 day bike , awesome varied scenery. All off main roads ,ie coarse gravel bike tracks or barely used unsealed roads. includes ride on Earnslaw .
took advice to skip mavora to central hill.worth taking into account dominant wind directions. no cellphone coverage in mavora, advice adequate clothing and bike repair kit.

Mike Barnett is a wonderful outfitter. He is one of the original architects of the entire Great Rides of NZ and his attention to detail, timely, flexible approach to our quasi-supported ride was outstanding. He thought of everything, accommodated our change to an E-Bike, and was extremely customer oriented (he offered me a cushy gel seat for Day 4 after hearing of my sore bum; what a relief). The ride itself is spectacular (we did it in 4 days/3 nights but if we repeat, may drop to 2 nights (Athol and Mossburn) as the first two days were really short rides). We wish we could go back again next year. Thank you, Mike - we wish you continued success!
