I visited Queenstown late Jan 2021 when tourism was very slow. I went by myself and this is one I absolutely recommend to people travelling solo. A full day activity by the time you get home, in time for dinner and drinks in town :) Huw was super patient, easy going and highly competent. I’d say medium level fitness to hike and then paddle back. I found the paddle a little challenging on my lower back as there’s no back support so just keep that in mind! A reasonable amount of core strength is helpful :) but very easy going and once you get the hang of it it seems to become easier and easier. 100% recommend for you to do this.

This is a great day out for those interesting in doing something different from the usual round of Wakatipu activities. Huw was a superb guide and we respected both his expertise and his commitment to all of the family (including the younger teen members) getting the best out of the experience (even when the weather was not ideal). No experience is necessary - but a desire for adventure is a must. The gorge prior to paddling the main river is highlight. The memories of this trip will last a lifetime.

Signing up for this course, I was scared of moving water and had never paddled solo on a river. Two days later I was cackling with laughter as I went backwards down grade two rapids and would happily and confidently do it again and again! This was a great combination of relaxed enough to feel like we had a say in what we were doing but also looked after enough to feel safe. I'm so glad I stuck my neck out and I'm now going to sign up for courses whereever I travel. Nice work guys!
