Fun highway to drive on
Apr 2021
Had some snow after the tunnel, so pretty close to Milford. Other than that good conditions and a well maintained highway.

Awesome!

We stayed an extra night in Te Anau so we could go through to Milford Sound. The scenery is breathtaking and it is easy to see why Rudyard Kipling called Milford the "eightieth wonder of the world". If you visit New Zealand you have to go to Milford Sound.

Many great spots to park for photos
Feb 2021
It is an amazing part of our country to visit.
This is a great road to travel on in the summer, there maybe some road closures during the winter due to snow & or ice.

Way better than expected
Feb 2021 • Couples
I expected a windy, steep and narrow road but it wasn’t for the most part. Scenery changed throughout from tree lined, to meadowlands to the spectacular mountains.

Spectacular in the Rain
Jan 2021
Fantastic drive to Milford Sound from Te Anau. There was so much to look at - beautiful birds such as bellbirds and kea, amazing waterfalls and rugged rivers.
We took our time and stopped lots of times along the way to explore and take photos. Just remember to take some insect repellent for when you get to Milford Sound itself - the sandflies are ready and waiting for your arrival.

Just amazing!

Once you enter the National Park you are blown away by the amazing scenery. Our first stop was at the Mirror Lakes, an easy five minute walk along boardwalks with good spots to take photos that reflect the mountains on a clear day. There were plenty of other lovely places to stop and enjoy the views, which are well sign-posted so you know when to turn off the road. Besides being wowed by all the beautiful mountains, we saw Kea in the wild, and enjoyed the drive through the Homer tunnel. It doesn't feel like a 2-hour drive (with short stops) from Te Anau when you're immersed in such beauty.

In awe of the majestic beautiful landscape
Jan 2021 • Family
Driving through to Milford Sound along the highway may seem long and tedious but worth it! The mountains and majestic landscapes makes you feel so in awe of how amazing nature can be. It was raining when traveling through but don't let that discourage you. The perks of the wet weather is the multiple cascading waterfalls coming off the mountains. We were lucky to have a bit of snow in January and a visit from a friendly kea before we hit the tunnel. Will be happy to travel back here again.

Great views on the way into Milford
Jan 2021
The views on the way into Milford are second to none. We saw a Kea stopped at the lookout after the Homer Tunnel. It was on a camper van being very curious. The Mirror Lakes were sight to behold. Lots of photo ops
