We were very lucky that the caretakers were there when we went, as it would of been a shame not to see inside, they told us a bit of the history its well worth a visit.

Using a greek-cross footprint gives the square look to this Basilica. Very plain inside with a gorgeous rose window behind the altar.

One of a number of Italian renaissance designed Catholic church buildings in New Zealand. Unfortunately recent repairs in the inside southern wall have not been successful.
Acoustics are excellent.
Spend a little extra time to walk the path over the road in front.

Reminded me of the numerous churches I saw in Europe. Equally magnificient this.Right in the heart of the city, just a few mins walk from main street.

Lovely church inside even though it is quite plain. The Stations of the Cross are intriguing, I didn't bother to look closely but they look metallic and are of a very contemporary design.

We drove into Invercargill and saw the dome of this church so decided to go have a look. It’s a beautiful building from the outside and the inside

Visited on Wednesday 2nd May. Make sure you plan to visit St Mary's Basilica to admire it's domed vaulted roof.

This grand building from the outside offers the promise of great things inside, well sorry the inside is very bland and contains little of the greatness that the outside radiates. Inside it is quite modern, with some interesting 3D pictures of Christian parts of the bible, and one stained glass window of any significance. A little bit of plasterwork around the inside of the dome, bit nothing you can't get at a DIY store. If you are in the area, have a look at the outside but then move on, more interesting things to do.
