Quick flight and friendly staff. If you can deal with the 15kg baggage limit, it’s absolutely worth doing. It was about $5 more than the ferry if you include the invercargill shuttle.
If you’re hiking, I recommend ferry there and fly back so you can buy the gas cans and food on the mainland (cheaper) and you’ll be lighter after eating it. You can’t take gas on the plane.

We chose to fly from Invercargill to Oban as I get terrible sea sickness and didn’t want to risk the boat journey over to spoil our day. The pricing difference between the flight and the boat was minimal and so worth it. We parked the rental car at Invercargill airport ($25 for the day), check in was super easy, quick boarding and 20mins of beautiful aerial scenery we landed. A mini bus was waiting for us and a few short mins we were in town. After our full day exploring, we were transported back to the airfield fr our return flight. Brilliant service, would 110% recommend, it gave us extra time for our day as we had the last flight back.

A fantastic little airline, with great Kiwi services. We booked return flights to Stewart Island as well as their tour of the island and tickets out to Ulva Island. all very easy having a one-stop shop! We were warned about the possibility of very bumpy flying due to the weather in this area, but we had two perfect flights, so what can I say but Lucky :) Not a bump, wonderful vistas and a great pilot. Small aircraft with limited room inside, however we did have every seat filled. The ground staff on Stewart Island were fantastic (thanks, Amy) and I would use them again, no worries at all.

Our group flew to Oban return in Feb/Mar 2020. The Islander flights were very efficient: on time, good briefing from the pilot, efficient ground transfers, everything you'd want. And a very good landing in challenging conditions at Invercargill on the return.
I wanted to fly to the west coast and have a short walk on the beach. Booked a scenic but the office was slightly funny about it: would depend on time and weather (of course) and how things worked out with aircraft on the day. Finally got a firm booking. It turned out we were flying with Raymond, the owner. We discussed possies with him over a map and he suggested where we could land and where we should fly for a good scenic over the southern part of the island. One of us was nervous about small planes and Raymond planned a flight that would keep us out of bad chop.
What a flight! We made a fighter pilot approach and landed on the beach at the Gullet, where we had a short walk and found pilot whale skeletal remains. Then off again - great power in the P-32! - we toured Doughboy, Pegasus, the various granite knobs that stick up, Paterson and a final swing over Oban. With great stories along the way. Spectacular. Not outrageously expensive. Well worth it and highly recommended! Thanks Raymond!

We flew to Stewart Island and back in January, with brilliant service in both directions. Left on time from Invercargill for a quick (15 minutes max) scenic flight, and on landing there was a van waiting to take us into Oban. Same on the return, and you can drop your bags off at their office early. Love that the lady who checked us in also packs the bags onto the van, drives the van, and then supplies wind conditions to the incoming flight !

Because Wifey is not a sailor, we decided to fly to Stewart Island from Invercargill. Check in at Invercargill was quick and easy with friendly helpful staff making life easy. We had booked a mid afternoon return same day but were told if we decided to stay a while longer, there were seats available on later flights. We could make a decision on the island and let the team over there know.
Top Tip: get the front row seats or the co-pilot seat for best views.
Plane was small but didn't feel cramped. Pilot was great. Flight was 20 minutes. Landing was an experience ... the runway is long enough so don't panic.
We took the 90 minute guided bus tour also with Stewart Island Flights. Een though there is only 28 kilometres of roads on Stewart Island, we never covered all of them because the tour took us to the best places anyway. Guide was brilliant and knew all the answers to the million questions we asked.
After the bus tour we did indeed move our return flight back to a much later flight and spend all day exploring more of the island.
Departing the island was quick and easy just like it was in Invercargill. The whole team was brilliant to deal with.
Top Tip: Book a Coast to Coast flight next time. Fly from Invercargill to Mason Bay then walk the 15.5km (4hr) relatively flat trail to Freshwater Hut then get a water taxi to Golden Bay wharf.
Top Tip: book accommodation and stay the night - that's when the 20,000+ kiwis come out to feed.

Exceptional customer service (really great experience booking and also great about refunding flights last minute when we caught covid). We have also flown with them previously and it was very scenic and safe and staff were wonderful then too. Will definitely fly with them again.

A great little airline. Very friendly staff. We flew down to Stewart Island on a day with very high winds forecasted. They worked very hard to get us onto Stewart Island before the high winds arrived. The last few minutes of the flight were very interesting to say the least. Just as well they have skilled pilots.

Fantastic views on a clear day. Luggage is limited to 15kg checked and small bag on board which is plenty. Check in is all very easy at Invercargill airport and flight was good, only 15-20 minutes. Like sitting on a comfy couch, it is very cosy, almost no leg room but it is fine. Once landed you get taken by a van to town and they do quick tour on the way which was nice. Grab bags and you are off. Such a convenient service as they were really busy. Had to wear masks. Friendly staff and I would definitely go again.

We flew into Oban from Invercargill on an amazing flight - beautiful weather and views. We stuffed up our bookings for the return flight - by one day (when we were still on the Rakiura Track). Not only did they rebook us for the following day, but gave us our own plane and had a wonderful flight back. Thank you SI Flights for your kindness and service!

We are travelling to NZ in December and would like to take in Stuart island as part of the tour. Is there anywhere to leave our luggage in Invercargill while we spend a couple of days on the island? We will then fly to Auckland from Invercargill. Thank you.

Can you do the half day option going at 1.30?
Written 13 November 2015
It would be best to check with the Stewart Island Flights. We caught the 1:30 flight back to Invercargill and could have taken the 4:30pm flight. This suggests you could fly to the island on the afternoon flight (1:30) and come back on the 4:30. The guy that picked us up from the plane at Stewart Island also did the tour, so I guess it could be arranged- no harm in asking. They may even do it that you have lunch first & then the tour.
