Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a really great place for all ages to visit. If you go about 10.30am, they release new butterflies which is so amazing to watch. It is particularly good to go on a cold day as it’s a tropical rainforest setting. The rest of the Museum is a must see as well.

The Otago Museum in Dunedin offers an amazing experience with about 1000 butterflies from different countries, some finches and some Chinese quails. The entrace for the "Tropical rainforest" experience is $15 per adult. Thus, if you are planning on visiting the rainforest more than 4 times, an annual pass for $60 is cheaper!

The experience itself is amazing. Butterflies in all shapes and colours can be seen and it is a great day out for some hours.

However, there is also a lot of room for improvement.

It is a great idea having wheelchair-access but using this access for prams is not advisable. A lot of butterflies are landing on the floor while the Chinese quails are running on the floor and get squeezed by prams as people do not look properly. It would be a great idea if the Otago museum can provide any kind of special prams which do not take up the whole walking trails.

Unfortunately, the surveillance for the animals is not given either. Butterflies are not living for a long time and in order to enlarge their life-time, they should not be touched. Yet, children do touche them regardless and a lot of parents do not care. I have been in a butterfly-exhibition in London and there the staff was constantly walking around in order to tell people off if they even tried to touch a butterfly. In my opinion, a much better way of ensuring the animal welfare! It was kind of ridiculous that one of the staff-members was mentioning today not to touch the butterflies while a little child next to her just touched it without the staff-member noticing (or caring about it). It is unbelievable how many dead or damaged butterflies you can count! I even saw a little child running after a Chinese quail while the parents did not care and the staff member pretended to not see it.

During lunch-time, the butterfly-area gets very hot. Most of the butterflies are hanging on the ceiling in order to get some fresh air during this time of day. The butterflies are imported from tropical countries, being used to regular rain and proper air-flow. It is sad to see that the Otago Museum missed out on this even though the area has been under refurbishment recently.

Alltogether a lovely idea with lots of room for improvement! But definitely worth the visit!
