If you only have 3-4 nights in Dunedin, book this for your first night and have a contingency plan (another activity you could do in it's place) ready, so that if they cancel and move it to another day or refund you, you could try to catch it on another day before going home or do something else with the time, I wanted to see it so paid $450 to move my flights and $150 to add an extra night accommodation to try go see the stars but then the weather cancelled it and they refunded instead...
The night the weather was bad in Dunedin, it was good in every state of Australia and some other city in New Zealand and tonnes of amazing photos were posted on social media by others, just to rub our bad luck in haha
So definitely book for the first or second night of your trip, to try to have it moved to another night before you leave if you can in case of bad weather.

Dunedin tour was nice, the Dunedin railway station architecture is magnificent. We walked up Baldwin Street the steepest street in the world. Toured the city with historical architecture. The Larnach Castle has a surprise history from original construction to total abandonment to reconstruction continuing present day. The gardens and views are also worthwhile.

Had such a blast in Dunedin with James as our tour guide. I was travelling solo and felt so comfortable and accommodated for. The tour was with a small group of 8 people which was great because we were all able to ask questions and find out heaps of information about each of our stops. The weather wasn’t great but it didn’t matter because James made up for it with his knowledge and enthusiasm 😄 After finishing my trip in NZ this was definitely my favourite tour. Highly recommend, thank you so much!!!

Our tour was cancelled the morning of the tour due to expected cloud cover that evening, and because of a problem with my credit card they came to our hotel and gave us the refund in cash. We appreciated their honesty in cancelling and we hope to take this tour on another visit to Dunedin!

Our guide was amazing and, even though there was no Aurora Australis, the sky was clear and the stars were everywhere! We learned a lot about the Māori history and navigating by the stars. Overall, excellent experience!

Dunedin was the last stop of our month-long exploration of New Zealand, a stop I added partly because Horizon Tours' Star Gazing tour really captured my imagination. Well, despite Kylie's best efforts, the weather did not cooperate with us. Bummer. BUT, we had also signed up for their Taste of Dunedin tour with Royal Albatross Centre and Monarch cruise and that wonderful day with our guide James was a stand-out tour of our entire vacation. James showed us his beautiful adopted city of Dunedin and our tours of the Albatross Centre watching several albatrosses soaring at eye-level was an experience we'll remember and the cruise was packed with scenery and wildlife.
James was most concerned and caring for a mobility issue one of us was having, and with his gentle support my wife and I were both able to enjoy every experience. He also subtly guided us to the best seats on the Monarch and made sure we were comfortable and had binoculars.
What really made our day so memorable was our conversations with James on a wide range of topics, including the most in-depth discussions of Māori history & culture that we had experienced (and wanted!) Those conversations led to a feeling of friendship that has left us a wonderful memory of our time in New Zealand.
And thanks again to Kylie who I think was disappointed as us that we could not meet and discuss the Māori night sky. If the reader is in Dunedin (and we highly recommend including it in your NZ itinerary), absolutely look at Horizon Tours for memorable experiences.

We felt we had gotten to know this beautiful area after spending the day with our guide, James. He did a splendid job of making us feel welcome, right down to learning each of our names. Our van was comfortable with large windows that did justice to the magnificent views we encountered.
Larnach Castle was interesting and the countryside memorable for its beauty. The town of Dunedin had a homey charm we appreciated and the locals are extremely amiable. But James made the tour with his friendliness and quick humor - we could have hung out with him for days. Recommended!

The Castle was incredible! The whole tour was actually, but the highlight was the castle! The trek up the steepest road in the world was challenging, but the views were spectacular! Absolutely recommend this tour!

The castle and the gardens were beautiful. Also bought and enjoyed lunch there. Driver was excellent. Enjoy small groups rather than large bus tours.
