About
A true icon of the South, we are the oldest continually operating Brewery in New Zealand, and the only site to have an historic Brew Floor and state of the art Brewery housed within the same location. After an extensive remodel in 2017 we are now excited to be able to offer a range of Tour packages to suit our diverse market - we can cater for groups of up to 40, as well as individual travelers and those wishing to experience a private tour. Our standard tours are approximately 45 minutes in duration, followed by up to 30 minutes tasting a range of beer and cider. The Speight’s Brewery is the spiritual home of New Zealand’s biggest beer brand, attracting over 25,000 visitors per year to experience the “Pride of the South”; as one if Dunedin’s most popular tourist attractions we are looking forward to welcoming you to our iconic experience. Good on ya mate

Thought we would drop in and have a look and taste the New Zealand brew. We done a tour of the old part of the Brewery which was excellent. Our tour guide (Mike) was explaining everything to us whilst we were navigating around the old equipment etc, there is one part which has been kept intact as they could show how the beer was made in old copper vats (now stainless steel ) which for scrap would fetch about $500,000. after we done a walk around which involved a few stairs but not strenuous we went to the sampling bar. This is the first beer tasting I've been to where you actually get a glass and get to try all the beers which were no tap and go back for second, thirds and so on, I think there was about 7 or 8 plus they had non alcoholic drinks in the fridge to sample also. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to kill a few hours really worth the money. cheers and beers Mike for a good tour.

Mikey gave us and several others a tour of the brewery yesterday. He took us through several areas of our he building and described the process Speights uses for brewing their beers.

One of the stops included a room that showed a video of the process but Mikey gave us an extra narrration above and beyond the video, then patiently answered our questions.

The tour ended in a tasting room and Mikey not only explained the proper way to dispense beer but described the characteristics of each beer.

I’ve been on tours of the mega brewers Anheiser Busch in St Louis and Yuengling in Florida where they massive groups are expected to walk through these mega breweries watching videos on their own but felt like I learned far more having our own special guide devoted to explaining and taking questions from us rather than cattle herding us.

BTW, the videos they showed us at the end of the tour of the Southern Man advertisements are worth the price of the tour alone!

A very interesting tour starting from the obligatory gift shop to the unique chimney capping. The guide spun an amusing commentary on the history of the founders, the building and the products. The tour was followed by tasting of the various beers. If memory serves correct, there was a choice from 14 varieties including a Cider.

The tour was lame. The brewery wasn't functioning and half of the stuff is no longer in use anyway. The tour guide was super awkward and couldn't even look people in the eye. He kept trying to make jokes that weren't even funny. He over and over talked about how all we wanted to do was get to the 30 minutes of unlimited beer at the end. Since I do not drink beer but went with my family, it was a losing situation because I came for the tour and not the beer. They make some other beverages but those weren't available at the end so it was a waste of time and money all around. Overpriced for what you get (nothing but some beer). I've been on many brewery tours across the globe and this ranks among the worst. I'm wondering why it is almost always sold out. I understand beer is expensive in NZ but would have been cheaper to just go buy a few good quality beers elsewhere.

Dear MyrrhAdventures, Thanks for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor - we appreciate that you took the time to share your experience. We are sorry to read that you did not enjoy your visit to the Speight's Brewery. The Speight's Brewery experience does encompass both the old and new aspects of our site - which we feel is a real point of difference from other Brewery Tours. As the oldest continually operating Brewery in New Zealand we do like to show our visitors the stunning heritage features, such as the copper Brew Floor and Water Room before heading up to our start of the art "New Brew Floor" built in 2012. Although we no longer brew using the copper vessels, these are an intrinsic part of our history - I am saddened to hear that you found these "lame". Although the 30 minute tasting is a key component of a brewery tour, this is not usually the focus of our activity and I am sorry to hear that you felt the guide placed too much emphasis on this portion of your Speight's experience. We will definitely follow up with our guides to make sure we are aligned in our expectations. If you could contact me directly via email (Rosie.Shanks@lionco.com) I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns. Once again thank you for identifying some potential opportunities for the improvement of our iconic experience. I look forward to hearing from you in person. We would welcome the opportunity to welcome you back to the Speight's Brewery and provide you with a southern experience true to our values and vision. Kind regards, Rosie Shanks Venue Manager

The tour was informative however, our guide was a bit too full of who had been on his previous tours. I have been on other brewery tours where you get to see the brewing process more hands on. So whilst it is interesting if you know nothing about the process it isn’t the best brewery tour I have been on. Of course, beer tasting at the end is always a good thing and the beers I tried were good.

Dear katelY9936NH, Thanks for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor - we appreciate that you took the time to share your experience. We are sorry to read that you did not fully enjoy your visit to the Speight's Brewery. All of our experienced guides strive to deliver and engaging and informative tour that caters to the interests of our guests. The Brewing process is covered in detail on both Brew floors within the factory - I am sorry to hear that you did not feel this was informative enough. As we no longer utilise a manual brewing process since the completion of our state of the art brew floor in 2014, it is not possible for us to deliver a "hands on" experience. We have incorporated interactive displays on our Copper Brew Floor to visually depict the brewing methods we used historically.

This was such an interesting tour, learning about the history of Dunedin, how the town planning was developed and the men who created Speight’s brewery. Always interesting to see how beer is made, comparing the old techniques to the new. It was a brewing day so we got to see the new side in action. Alison was an amazing tour guide and at the end you get to sample beers. The teens got to sample Hopt - flavoured sodas which my daughter loved. The gift shop had everything branded Speight’s you could possibly wish for and as a bonus for doing the tour you could buy flagons of beer at a discounted price. Definitely recommend this tour!

Beer lovers and travellers must come here. Lovely staff, wonderful tour and all round great time! This review is a bit late but it still stands as one of my best memories in Dunedin ever! Best tour guides too, funny, knowledgeable and super friendly. Tasting the beers at the end is a plus too, as well as the gift shop at the beginning and end is nice, super easy to access the tour and prices are awesome. Must do for anyone who likes beer, Speights or having fun in general!

Thanks Speights team!

A great part of Dunedin, if not NZ history.

The guide had her script well memorised, but I had a few off script questions and her answers made it obvious she knew what she was talking about.

Everyone who works there, from the gift shop staff to the workers we met, are really invested in doing their job well.

Would definitely recommend having dinner at Speight's Ale House when in Dunedin
We had the Lamb Shank with mash and veg and the Braised Beef with mash and peas.
Both meals were nicely presented, quite a large serving at a reasonable price and a great taste. The staff attending to us were very friendly.
Best to book a table as it can be busy.

Very accomodating and knowledgeable staff. We had an excellent time and learnt quite a bit. Would highly recommend 10+ We were in a group of four so the experience was even better as we had plenty of time for questions and answers. It’s a “must do” if you’re in Dunedin. Plenty of merchandise to purchase and the tasting at the end of your tour just tops off your visit perfectly.
You definitely get your money’s worth.
