Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is one of those places that's not on many people's radars, but it's worth a visit for the excellent view. There's very limited parking on Highcliff Road where you can begin the climb up to the memorial. It starts with a staircase, followed by a steep but well-worn trail around farm fields.

Perhaps complicating matters is the fact that there appear to be many names for this memorial. I'm calling it by what's engraved on the plaque at the base of the statue. It reads "Otago Peninsula Fallen Soldiers' Memorial".

Chanced upon this lookout driving back to Dunedin. After a short 10 minute walk up to the memorial which had steps, was overgrown, and narrow you come to the Fallen Soilders Monument which offers almost 360 degree views of Dunedin and out to Aramoana. The momument is a fitting tribute to those fallen; it sits proud on a rock outcrop, overlooking the bay and surrounding farm land.

It is hard to see the monument as it high up and you are restricted by the fences (electric) to the paddocks surrounding to get a better view.

But the view from the monument to the surrounding land/bay/ocean is sensational if the sun is right and the sky is clear.

Worthy of a visit.

You can get to the monument either from Highcliff road and it is only a short walk (max 5 mins) up to the monument, although it is uphill and not great for wheelchair access. There is also a longer walk using the Tomahawk Lagoon track and you can do a circular which brings you out near the monument. The views over Dunedin are beautiful, either looking down the harbour or back to the town and cost. There are only a few parking spots but usually, it is not that busy.
