Many of the cruise ship tours take people on a quick spin around this place in a mini-bus, but you need to wander slowly and enjoy the heritage roses, which obviously look their best in Summer. There are over 1200, and most of them historic, some over 100 years old – as old as the graves. There's a small exhibition in the Sexton's Cottage near the entrance that explains the history. It's fascinating.

A must-do in Dunedin if you are there in October-December. Many hundreds of heritage roses in flower, with their wonderful perfume in the air and flowers cascading out of trees. Many of the roses are "family roses" for the grave plots. Beautiful, historic and fascinating.

Atmosphere. Heritage. Nature. Heritage roses. A place to reflect. A place to treasure.
What a credit to the Heritage rose group for their Herculean labour of love to reinstate the heritage roses after their unfortunate loss. Thank you to the council for their help and ongoing support in maintaining this local and national treasure.

A hidden gem! Beautiful old roses in a Victorian garden cemetery. The fragrance was heavenly. A wonderful wander and you can take your dogs through on a leash. If you’re short of time, you can drive through - slowly, and with the windows down to appreciate the fragrance.

I have recently visited the Northern Cemetery, and was blown away by the work that Heritage Roses Otago members have put into the area. They have planted and tended so many roses which adds so much the the wonderful site this cemetery is on. What beautiful views of the city from many spots. The Heritage Roses are very fitting for a cemetery with so much history.

The hill where this cemetery sits has very much looking after to do. Local government neglected the upkeep of this place.

This has the Larnach "tomb" with all that money, still killed himself and still dead. But it's cool to visit. Pleasant cemetery to walk around with lots of old old plots.

A unique place on a hill, from where you can see the Logan Park and the bay. Dunedin's story and more. Of particular interest are family tombs and inscriptions on them. The history of New Zealand from the early 19th century. Unique place. I highly recommend

I was fortunate to visit Dunedin Northern Cemetery on 12 December, where over 1000 heritage roses were doing their best to impress. And impress they did! This cemetery really is a "must see" if you are lucky enough to be visiting Dunedin. It has amazing headstones of many different styles, telling stories about Dunedin's forebears. The terrain is undulating, making for interesting vistas and landscape. The brochures that are available make for an enjoyable ramble. The cemetery is very conveniently located - you can pop across the road to the beautiful Botanical Gardens and bird aviaries. I was surprised to learn that this is probably the only cemetery of its era in NZ that was not laid out in denominations and a grid like pattern. Rather, it was especially laid out to denote a park-like setting, and park -like it definitely is. There are masses of established trees providing great structure and setting off the roses so beautifully. Don't miss this Dunedin treasure. Check out Facebook Roses of the Dunedin Northern Cemetery page for more details as well as the Facebook Dunedin Northern Cemetery page for some glorious photos of the roses doing their best to impress (thanks Sophie Barker for posting those lovely shots - my photos could not compare - hence none posted here by me!)
