About
We have moved and expanded. The museum is now NZ Museum of Toys & Collectibles and the Toy Collector operates as the museum shop. The museum display is the result of 50 years of collecting of a broad range of toys as possible. This isn't exactly a museum in that the toys are not all old and they aren't all in pristine condition since toys are meant to be played with. An eclectic collection of toys through the ages designed to put a smile on your face and remind you of childhood days of playing whether recent or very distant. You are sure to find something you had, have or always wanted in the broad range of displays.

Relive your childhood and enjoy
Sep 2020
I loved this place, it was like walking back into my childhood. It has so many different areas, all well set out, covering the different toys.
I loved ( and still do as i now collect them myself) the matchbox, lego and star wars areas. There's so much to see and take in. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time as you don't want to feel rushed. I understand it's one mans collection with some parts donated for display as well.
The entry is only $15 and well priced and worth it. As a big kid i can't say enough about this place. The sons of the owner were working that day and were happy to talk about it. In a word, in your in Christchurch.... GO!!
P.S: this review asked if it's a romantic place or activity for couples....it could be if you love toys hahaha

Outstanding!!
Jun 2018 • Couples
My wife and I were looking for something to do in the morning before and appointment in the afternoon and came across The Toy Collector on Trip Advisor. We arrived and was greeted by Alan who was a super friendly owner operator and a obvious passionate collector of toys.

After an introduction and history from the man him self we gladly payed $10 person to enter the display. As soon as we walked in it was like another world, it was extremely well set out and presented. We spent about 1 and a half hours with big smiles on our faces slowly cruising the displays.

The more you look, the more you see!

We highly recommend this outstanding exhibit.

Hidden Gem
Apr 2018 • Family
We had read a little about this place but weren't expecting to find such a gem. Well laid out and a fascinating collection with thousands of Hot Wheels, a room full of diecast cars, a huge lego collection plus Disney and Harry Potter!! The train layout was fantastic. So much to look at we will definitively be back.

Am I that old?

How come he's got so many of the toys I played with as a kid?
Nostalgia for a tenner - not three bad (better than not too bad).
I can't say more, I'll run out of space (like he is - he hopes to open bigger premises).
Go and visit for yourself (and take the kids, grandkids, great grandkids.....etc

Return back to your childhood and favourite toys
Feb 2018 • Couples
We visited the Toy Collector and what a wonderful surprise. The owner is so kind and hospitable and the toy museum is one of the best I have experienced in this country. A wide range of New Zealand made as well as international toys going back in time. Many toy soldier and model care displays as well as Lego, dolls and all the famous model makes over the years. My favorite was the model train display with an incredible range of models moving and buildings. Takes at least 40 minutes to take the display in with so many scenerios and scenes, even a cricket game and basketball game. Two cute trains rail around. Worth staying there for 2 hours on a wet day or any day. Close to the centre of the city. Fee is $10 and $5 for children.

Left me amazed - and I will be back, again, and again, and again...
Jan 2018 • Family
I was expecting couple of old toys, dusty, and scattered all over. What my wife and I, along with our 3 and 6 year old daughters found, was simply a magical world. My girls were in awe, and for the first time ever (not even uttered during Disney World trip), stated "This is so much fun, this is the best thing ever, I love it, see this, see that, WOW". From grown up perspective, the respect and care that has been taken in placing the various toys, to periods or types, was stunning. I found so many things that reminded me of my childhood, and my girls also found toys from there current childhood. Four things: 1) Go there, with or without your kids! 2) Bring your or your kids old toys and donate it there - it is about the most respect ever you can give an old toy. 3) Hope that the Toy Collectors will find an even bigger places, because they are already outgrowing this one. 4) Spread the word. I didn't know I needed this, but I now know I and everyone else needs a Toy Collector/Museum in their city!

Thanks so much Sam for your kind words - we've tried hard to do this right and to give every toy the respect it deserves so it's always great to know people see that. Any I love all your suggestions for others - we have big dreams of a much, much larger space!

be prepared to spend hours!
Jul 2017 • Family
a fantastically well presented collection of toys, and more, from several eras. there is just so much to look at, and the older you are, the more you will find. young children may not be so fascinated by the "old" stuff but the owners have thought of that and have a scavenger hunt for when they start to lose interest... and it helps the grownups find a few more treasures too! my young companions spent ages playing with the wooden train set - or peering at the miniature model train village and the Lego train setup - everything else is behind glass so you don't have to worry too much about supervising the kids!

We visited on a Saturday morning and there was a very warm welcome. A great collection of toys, something for young and old. Enjoy nostalgia as you reminisce about the toys you played with as a child.
