Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This review is about the Transitional Cathedral.' The cardboard tubes atop the 'container' walls have led to it being called 'The Cardboard Cathedral'. It is set out in an understated way to retain solemnity whilst reflecting the determination to be undaunted by the 2011 earthquake. In the circumstances it is a remarkable building.
The shape of the building reminds me of the Arctic Cathedral at Tromso in Norway.

The rebuild of this magnificent cathedral is still a work in progress and will be for some time yet. The fences block the view of the building and some of the spires can be seen near the fence. This delayed rebuild is due to deliberations about the future of the existing cathedral on the current site.

It is amazing after almost 12 years since the earthquakes, that so much work is still needed on this cultural icon. We were told that it will be around 2028 before the reconstruction is completed. You can walk around the worksite to inspect the ongoing reconstruction but cannot enter. Best views are from the 4th Floor of the adjacent Christchurch Library.

The centre of the city is Cathedral Square, with the Christchurch Cathedral in the middle. I climbed the steeple tower in 2007. That tower collapsed in 2011. They built a temporary cathedral out of cardboard nearby and debated what to do with the original, heavily damaged cathedral. In 2017, they decided to reinstate it, with work expected to be completed in 2027. You can see the cathedral under renovation through the holes in the fence and also read about it on the surrounding wall.

On 22 Nov. 2011, a quake hit Christchurch, leaving 185 dead and thousands of buildings destroyed, among them Christchurch Cathedral. It took years to decide on the Cathedral's fate. Now the Victorian Gothic structure is being rebuilt. Rebuilding will take 10 years and cost $100 million, but the building will withstand any future quake, engineers say. Christchurch Cathedral is one of the city's highlights. Nothing can prevent future earthquakes but this icon of the city's identity will be built to last.

We saw the tv coverage at the time but the up close visual of the damage to such an iconic building has an effect on you. Some say that nine years on and nothing has been done is incorrect, this building is not just bricks and mortar it is stone and of variable shape and size there is also a shortage of qualified stonemasons. The people with the responsibility of resurrecting the Cathedral have one chance at making sure that if another earthquake were to happen it will withstand the tremors.
We would love to come back when it’s completed to see it in all it’s glory!

In years gone by, the most prominent structure in Christchurch was the Cathedral The Cathedral began constructiton in 1864 and was completd in 1904. It was built in Gothic Revival style by a prominent British architect. For an Anglican congregation "Christchurch" has an auspicious resonance.. The Cathedral became associated with Christchurch. Unfortunately, New Zealand is not known as the "Shakey Isles" for nothing. Following a series of earthquakes that did minor damage, the 2011 eathquake resulted in the partial demolition of the Cahedral. After years of indecision, it was eventually decided in September 2017 that the Cathedral would be rebuilt..Work is expected to commence soon.

Visited this site and really highlighted the strength of the earthquakes here. The building was at one time very beautiful and a shame to see one part of its walls now collapsed. However this is an important reminder of what happened here,

In the 2011 earthquake the church's tower collapsed and left this otherwise beautiful old building as a ruin.
Finally, almost 10 years later, it's been decided that they going to rebuild/reinstate the cathedral. It'll take a few years for sure.

Every time I've returned to my hometown since the earthquake this dreadfully sad reminder remains. Still nothing done! My terrible rating relates not to the ruin itself but to the planning processes and squabbling of all involved. Get on with it for goodness sake.
