Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I spent much of the afternoon at Mona Vale Garden Park. The Gatehouse was built in the early 1900s as staff quarters for the gatekeeper and then a succession of gardeners. The Avon runs through Mona Vale. The Homestead is now a restaurant.
The gardens were lovely. It is a nice place for a stroll. The Fernery was originally part of the New Zealand International Exhibition in 1906-1907. While I was waiting for the bus to return to the city centre, I sat on a bench and watched the ducks by the Avon.

After the earthquake it took 5 years to rebuild the building. To be honest, they did the most incredible job to make it look original with the pressed metal ceilings and the carved wooden stair case. I think due to Covid19 it's only open for functions

Smaller and quieter than the Christchurch botanical gardens. We went in December and the rose garden was in full bloom. It was gorgeous. You can also get food at the beautiful homestead restaurant on some days of the week. The homestead was closed on the day that we went so I would advise checking ahead of time on the website.
We were able to walk to and do both the Mona Vale Gardens and Christchurch Botanical Gardens in the same day.

What a disappointment! Apart from the lovely setting and excellent service the actual high tea was a real let down.
6 tiny, and I mean tiny savouries and 6 tiny sweets each and one small plunger of tea, no offer of a refill... the white bread ‘sandwich’ had been in the fridge and so the bread was rock hard and ‘wet’, the minute sweet scone was over baked and shattered on cutting so virtually impossible to spread the jam and cream , perhaps chef should have a look at what a high tea really should be like .. for the price it was not worth it .. a real shame.

Very disappointing visit to Mona Vale today. Booked for high tea to celebrate two family birthdays.waited over half an hour for drinks then over an hour for meals. Staff knew we were coming for High tea Most of food on plates would have be prepared well before we arrived and shouldn’t have taken this time to plate up. Five children with us hungry having to wait until after two to have lunch.Their high tea plates came with individual pots of tea ( children aged between five and twelve do not want a pot of tea each) We had to pay extra for soft drink for them. Staff lovely and friendly but service shocking Mona Vale so lovely but will be a long time before we return

We spent a pleasant afternoon walking the paths of Mona Vale Gardens during our recent visit to Christchurch.Situated along the banks of a pleasant little river winding it's way through the property, the Mona Vale Gardens are home to many beatifully laid out and landscaped garden areas.. Although the Rose Garden section was our favorite, section, all of the plants, shrubs, and trees were lovely. Most were tagged and labeled for identification. The paths artistically wound around the garden. A small dock was available in the river for those wanting to go punting along the river through the gardens.

After visiting the Christchurch Farmers Market on a beautiful Sunday morning, we walked over to Mona Vale Park. There were hardly any visitors in the park, albeit a very warm day of 31°C. The rose garden is beautiful. Take a walk along the river and see ducks. Sit on a bench and have lunch.

Our enjoyable Sunday lunch far exceeded our expectations with food beautifully cooked & presented, servings were more than generous & "doggy bags" were required. The restaurant setting is lovely with attractive views over the gardens. Definitely recommend a visit

We attend the Outdoor play Romeo and Juliet in the idyllic setting of Mona Vale. The gardens, particularly the Fern House are stunning.
These gardens are peaceful and beautifully maintained.
Make sure you get to the Rose garden, the fern house and the lily pond , behind the homestead.

Mona Vale is a small treasure !ocated within walking distance to central Christchurch. After meandering through the botanical gardens we continued our walk through the golf course to Mona Vale (about 20 minutes). The lovely park that follows the river is like a miniature botanical garden complete with its own rose garden. The thing that surprised us is that all the gardens are free to the public.
