ReStart is the realized concept of shipping container storefronts set up in ChCh city center to permit ongoing tourist trappings. Yes, it's worth a visit to see, but not much time is really needed. You begin to recognize many of the same souvenirs in the limited stores. There are a few with some art/crafts but very pricey. Disappointing for us... More

A nice variety of stores and food places with fun sculptures of typical kiwi scenes. Well worth working around. We were there on a Saturday morning and many people were having breakfast and coffees at the food places. Although set up as temporary structures after the earthquake, they have endured.

The ingenuity of people in a crisis never ceases to amaze me. This is a brilliant concept and every person we dealt with in the stores was friendly and helpful about the town, not just their stock. The eateries are great and the spaces well designed.

Christchurch is recovering from the destruction caused by the earthquake in 2011 and the temporary re:Start shopping mall made from shipping containers is an innovative way of rejuvenating this area of the city. An unusual shopping mall but very practical and well worth a visit, especially if doing a walking tour of Christchurch.

Due to the earthquakes in Central Christchurch Cashel Street has been transformed into a cool container shopping centre which is rather trendy and different. It is fast becoming an icon and a great place for locals and visitors a like to relax, eat, chat and shop. The street is a different experience as the shops are beautifully painted ex shipping... Good to browse the small shops in this startup area. Lots of different shops, clothes , gifts and souvenirs. There are a few cheap eat places for lunch, snack bar type.

We knew about the concept and it was as good as we expected. A busy hub, especially at lunchtime, with a fantastic variety of foods available as well as some great little gift shops and clothes stores. Clothing was quite expensive though. We were in two minds as to whether to go into the city, but the Cashel St mall... More

This is really part of the Christchurch folklore by now and is a must visit, if only to see just how ingenious commercial folks can be to overcome a major disaster like the earthquake and to create and maintain a tourist attraction at that too! There are numerous small eateries as well as banks and shops. I must recommend the... More
