A pleasant free attraction in The centre of Christchurch
On a 30°c day it was nice to visit this Art Gallery. Air Conditioning was welcome and free WiFi available with no lengthy login required. The Art on display is of a quality the is expected from a small city well away from the world's major cultural hubs. Featuring mainly New Zealand Artists and mostly are from the 20th Century. Well worth spending an hour to browse.

    Mostly contemporary
I'm really not into contemporary and this is what the majority was. The museum is free which is wonderful and appreciated. Staff very helpful. Displays were nice but not my real interest. Strings of Light was very interesting. It is only on display until July 14. If you are looking for a relaxing quiet activity I would strong suggest. You can probably do in under 2 hours. When you are done there is a coffee shop across the street.

    Wonderful Art Gallery Museum
What a wonderful gallery/museum. First the architecture and interiors are stunning, Open and inviting you feel uplifted just walking in. Then the docents were very informative, and you could tell they loved their jobs - who wouldn't? The exhibits were stunning and while I am sure they change, the blend of national art for us featuring the Māori artist, Marilynn Webb, were breathtaking! Truly worth a visit. The bistro had some great food too! :)

Spent 70 minutes on this two floor museum with fine mix of Maori, avant-garde, traditional, and modern art forms. Completely free. Welcoming staff. Touching native tribute to Mosque shootings.

This exquisite modern building of glass and curves houses a variety of captuvating art. I appreciated it's openness and being able to see the older buildings of Christchurch through the windows. Also love the selection of art, some of which is interactive.

This is a stunning building with lots of space for temporary exhibitions. Some of the galleries were closed when we called, but what was on show was varied and interesting. The small permanent collection was imaginatively displayed and contained some works by recognised European artists such as Lord Leighton and Lowry.
Friendly staff and fee entry.

The new museum is an architectural masterpiece, an eye catching building that does credit to those who designed and constructed it.
An unusual fact that it has free entry, a gift shop that has a wide variety of merchandise and gifts.
We only had a short time to go through but will definitely spend longer on our next visit.
Well worth the time.

This is a very new and modern building so has great space to exhibit art. There was a fantastic choice of great art. Yes you are allowed to take pictures in most areas. Entrance at this place is also free of charge. There is a Caffee in the building.

A nice place to call into and wander around. Everything is free and the art ranges from classical compositions, to NZ Art, through to some challenging modern and installation art. Well worth a visit.

We didn’t have any preconceptions of what this gallery would be like and we were very pleasantly surprised. The art is mostly from New Zealand, so we discovered artists didn’t know at all - and loved. The gallery is well-designed and curated and I’d highly recommend it.

An very well curated gallery. The is something for everyone. Different styles and types of art. When I was there there were fewer thing I did like than those I was unmoved by. However, frequently changing exhibits mean that the gallery is always worth a visti.

Not world class or spectacular but good for a rainy day visit, or if there is a special exhibition advertised that you are particularly interested in.
The architecture is attractive and café outside offers a nice dining experience.
I wasn’t overly impressed or moved with the quality or range of art.

We were lucky with weather for most of our NZ holiday, but Christchurch was cold, windy and wet! So we were looking for indoor activities. The art gallery was fine-we really enjoyed the large exhibition of prints by NZ artists, but there were a couple of other local artists whose work was not to our taste. I'd rate the Antarctic centre and Quake City as better options, but this was still a very nice way to spend a couple of hours out of the weather.
