KiwiRail Scenic Journeys offer some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. With three train services that span the country, each with its own unique identity, there is no better way to experience the best New Zealand has to offer. All services feature state of the art carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The Northern Explorer (Auckland - Wellington), Coastal Pacific (Christchurch - Picton) and TranzAlpine (Christchurch - Greymouth) each offer unique travel experiences and itinerary options for individual travellers, families and small groups. Each journey begins and ends at convenient locations for onward travel. For added savings and flexibility, three kinds of Scenic Rail Passes are available, including options for travel between the North Island and South Island by Interislander ferry or Sounds Air flight.

We had trouble actually finding the Auckland "station" and this was a but unnerving for the start of the journey, then discovering that the station itself was infact a couple of containers tacked together made us wonder just what we had let ourselves in for!! Once on the train we calmed down to enjoy the journey right through to Wellington.... More

This was a great option to travel in relaxed comfort on the North Island. I went from Auckland to Wellington with a multi-day stop in National Park. HOWEVER - Be warned that there is a glitch on the mobile website when booking tickets. To add a stop in your journey, you have 2 options: (1) Buy a Starter fare and... More

I anticipated this excursion with high expectations of an amazing engineering feat viewed from a train. The excursion started at Ohakune in comfort, with good audio, pleasant staff and plenty of leg room. However moving to the open carriage to really take in the experience and get better photos was a bad decision. The carriage is scungy, in need of... More

A highly recommended and novel way to see scenic NZ. Took the Northern Explorer from Wellington to National Park Station (roughly midway to Auckland) and enjoyed every minute of the trip. When we encountered a 'mishap' with fallen tree branches across the line Kiwirail were quickly on hand to remedy the situation and provide basic first aid to shaken and... More

VERY disappointing pricing policy from NZ rail unlike the rest of the country which offers value for money this trip is priced at NZD 716 for 2 people return Christchurch - Greymouth in march 17, not a great advert for NZ raill to rip off the overseas tourist. One to avoid I think...

The views cutting through the south island from Christchurch to Greymouth (Tranz Alpine) were pretty stunning and was better than driving, and probably faster. Plus you get to walk around, head to the open air car for photos, grab a cocktail/coffee/snack from the cafe cars, and see some impressive scenery along the way. The best scenery for photos is on... We had originally booked to travel on the Coastal Pacific, but after the Kaikoura earthquake the seaside line was badly damaged so we had to change our plans. We were not disappointed! This is a beautiful journey through the Southern Alps. The commentary is very good and informative. We can't recommend this trip enough and we are looking forward to... More

We took the Coastal Pacific train from Christchurch to Blenheim, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The train was clean and comfortable, and the windows were very large to allow an excellent view of the beautiful scenery. We pre-ordered food, but it really wasn't necessary, as they have a nicely equipped food car for largely prepackaged meals. There is an open... More

We had arranged our rail journey a month before departing for New Zealand. We were to take the train from Auckland to Wellington, then after an overnight in wellington, to transfer to the ferry and take the rest of our trip by train from Picton to Christchurch. Our only glitch was that we arrived on the morning of November 13... More
