KiwiRail Scenic Journeys offer some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. With three train services that span the country, each with its own unique identity, there is no better way to experience the best New Zealand has to offer. All services feature state of the art carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The Northern Explorer (Auckland - Wellington), Coastal Pacific (Christchurch - Picton) and TranzAlpine (Christchurch - Greymouth) each offer unique travel experiences and itinerary options for individual travellers, families and small groups. Each journey begins and ends at convenient locations for onward travel. For added savings and flexibility, three kinds of Scenic Rail Passes are available, including options for travel between the North Island and South Island by Interislander ferry or Sounds Air flight.

Great way to see the country while traveling through it

The views cutting through the south island from Christchurch to Greymouth (Tranz Alpine) were pretty stunning and was better than driving, and probably faster. Plus you get to... read more

VERY disappointing pricing policy from NZ rail unlike the rest of the country which offers value for money this trip is priced at NZD 716 for 2 people return Christchurch - Greymouth in march 17, not a great advert for NZ raill to rip off the overseas tourist. One to avoid I think...

The views cutting through the south island from Christchurch to Greymouth (Tranz Alpine) were pretty stunning and was better than driving, and probably faster. Plus you get to walk around, head to the open air car for photos, grab a cocktail/coffee/snack from the cafe cars, and see some impressive scenery along the way. The best scenery for photos is on... We had originally booked to travel on the Coastal Pacific, but after the Kaikoura earthquake the seaside line was badly damaged so we had to change our plans. We were not disappointed! This is a beautiful journey through the Southern Alps. The commentary is very good and informative. We can't recommend this trip enough and we are looking forward to... More

We took the Coastal Pacific train from Christchurch to Blenheim, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The train was clean and comfortable, and the windows were very large to allow an excellent view of the beautiful scenery. We pre-ordered food, but it really wasn't necessary, as they have a nicely equipped food car for largely prepackaged meals. There is an open... More

We had arranged our rail journey a month before departing for New Zealand. We were to take the train from Auckland to Wellington, then after an overnight in wellington, to transfer to the ferry and take the rest of our trip by train from Picton to Christchurch. Our only glitch was that we arrived on the morning of November 13... More

This was the best way to travel to the west coast. This was the most scenic ride I have ever been on. We spent a majority of the time in the front cars taking pictures, etc. There were some minor problems on our ride such as the air conditioners were not working and the coffee machines were not working either... We traveled with another couple last Friday up to Auckland and back to Palmerston North on Monday, the experience was wonderful from the comfort of the train, the excellence of the staff and the wonderful meals. We just wanted a relaxed weekend and we sure got that there was no stress. In particular we would like to congratulate the staff... More

My group thoroughly enjoyed the Kiwi Rail. We assumed it would be a regular train, with views along the way. We were pleasantly surprised to have headphones and a conductor offering informative bits, in addition to spectacular views of the surroundings. Would definitely do again - and spend more time in the open air car!

What a great way to travel from Christchurch to Greymouth! The scenery was beautiful, the seats were comfortable, restrooms were clean, they store your luggage for you, and the commentary was interesting! The only challenge was that there was only one open air car for photography, and some folks basically parked themselves there, and had no intention of giving anyone... More

The commentary on both trips was very informative. It was delivered via headphones with a screen lighting up to let you know it is going to start. The train was very clean and comfortable. The staff was pleasant and came through the train to take orders and pick up trash. The train was a great way to see the Pacific... More
