We wanted to learn more about Maori culture while in New Zealand, so this seemed a good opportunity. We bought the full experience including a shuttle from the hotel. It was pouring with rain, which did impact on the evening as we weren’t able to visit the village within the wildlife park. We saw the kiwi on our informative tour of the wildlife park, then the Ko Tane Welcome took place near the covered performance area instead of in the village. The performers must have been frozen, wearing only Maori costume & bare feet, but the enthusiasm was amazing. We learned about Maori culture, weapons & tools & the men in the audience were taught the Hakka. The food was delicious! Bread & dips, a choice of 2 soups, a buffet of meat, salad & veg then a delicious pavlova & ice cream. We were also invited to feed the fallow deer between courses. We had a lovely evening. The performers enthusiastically entertained & informed & we enjoyed lively chatter with our group as we ate delicious food.

I booked the entire experience with the park tour, the cultural show and the dinner. We had about 20 minutes before the tour started so I wandered around one side of the park looking at all the animals. Had I have known the extent of the park I would have gone earlier. The tour guide was informative and knowledgeable. I would have liked the opportunity to have fed the birds honey but this was not offered. The Maori guide who started the cultural experience was great. He explained Maori culture and history and talked us through the ceremony we were going to see. The 'villagers' talked us through each of the stations and activity. Entertaining. The 'warrior' who explained what the Hangi was, was very entertained and funny. Seeing the Hangi pit opened was a great addition. The show was entertaining and full of history. Not sure how an acoustic guitar is Maori culture but that was only a minor flaw. Unfortunately, the big flaw was the dinner. I knew the mains were buffet style so that was a surprise. What was a surprise is that by the time the second table could get food, the meats and vegetables were tepid, and the lamb almost gone. I would strongly suggest bain maries be used to keep the food warm and make sure there is enough food for everyone. Overall, it was a great evening just with some minor flaws that do not overly detract from the experience.

We were delighted with learning about the Maori culture! The representatives who explained their cultural traditions were genuine and inspirational. The show was fun, with audience participation. The Hangi meal, cooked underground was delicious! A great cultural experience!
