With so many buildings lost or not useable, this set of shops, banks, bars and food places made out of containers is a great place to visit. It is not big but contains some good fast food stalls and is a great place to meet for a drink or snack while figuring out where to go next.

It is restored city's shopping centrer's damaged or destroyed by the devastating 2011 earthquake, Christchurch created a mall made mostly out of shipping containers. Built into re-purposed shipping and storing containers, the businesses that make up this shopping center consist mostly of art, jewelry, fashion, and food. The stores have some interesting products and are staffed by mostly young employees. The food options are also great and present plenty of seating. There are also a number of cash machines and banks for those who like to shop with cash.

Christchurch has done good job of bringing back the downtown retail shops by using storage containers. These containers provide temporary building structures while new retail mall is being built following the 2011 earthquake.

The draw is really the clever rebuilding of the area, rather than the shops themselves (although the abundance of souvenir shops was great as we visited on our last day in NZ). The use of space and shipping containers is clever and inspiring. Highly recommend checking out the food trucks (J-Bings was fantastic!).

OK...this is a shopping center. Shopping centers are not usually considered an "attraction" as such - that is, people don't usually go out of their way to see one, unless it is remarkable for some feature. This one is truly remarkable.
A shopping center built from re-purposed shipping containers! What a creative way to deal with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake! You can find myriad shops herein, including gemstones and other collectibles, clothing, sports equipment, food, and gifts. I can think of several places where a shopping center like this would do well. Aside from rapidly continuing business after the earthquake, the unique nature of this shopping center brings the curious out to see it, increasing foot traffic! Ingenious!

The draw here is definitely the rebuilding part, which is interesting. The shops are pretty much the same as any other little shopping area. If you happened to be near for something else I would say to stop in, But not something I would make a point to see again.

I first visited this shopping area in 2012 and was impressed at the ingenuity shown by the kiwis in putting up a shopping centre within 60 days of the quake, and looking very chic.
With new buildings going up around it you might expect this area to look a little tired but it still has panache and is worthy of a stroll

What do you do when an earthquake demolished your shopping district. Build a temporary shopping area out of shipping containers.

Ship containers are cleverly stacked and house temporary shops while their more permanent counterparts are being constructed. They have been so well-received, they may stay - or be moved to another area of the city that needs a retail boost. Shops are okay. Maybe I'm just "shopped out" - but there are interesting low cost food stands and street musicians that make for a fun time. Give it a try if you have the time.

We stayed in Christchurch for 4 days. One day we decided to tour the city centre and see this mall. Very impressive! The unique use of shipping containers to house everything from clothing stores to restaurants is quite clever. The city is to be commended on providing a means to get business back as quickly as possible. People seemed to enjoy the mall, food courts and most had shopping bags in hand. Good on ya.

It was a small mall with stores operating out of shipping containers. Very interesting concept. Even the essential services like banks and post office had their own containers. There were food trucks and benches for people to sit and eat, but it was too cold. Didn't find much to buy so just came here to take a walk.
