About
Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

Banks peninsula walk
Apr 2021 • Solo
Stunning from start to finish.
This was the third walk I did this month after the Heaphy and Rakiura tracks. All Very different and offering different landscapes and challenges. This was absolutely delightful and charming.
The accomodation was unique, quirky, clean and comfortable with everything you need and options for all types of traveller.
The walk itself offered stunning views, beautiful bush, waterfalls, swimming holes, long comfortable stretches and a few challenges and uphill climbs, all the wildlife and farmlife to satisfy every interest.
Can not recommend this walk highly enough. Perfect for a two or three day hiking option in a stunning part of the country free of crowds and busy walkways.

Fab Views of Christchurch

Visit the Summit Rd for a wonderful experience looking over Christchurch, the plains and the Southern Alps as well as Lyttelton Harbour. Have a great coffee at the Sign of the Kiwi.

Banks Peninsula is of volcanic origin on the east coast. It comprises of two large harbours and many smaller bays and coves. Great for photography.

Just splendiferous

So scenic, and largely ‘untouched’. For lunch/dinner, in Akaroa (wharf area) ‘La Thai’ is run by a genuine Thai family and the food is delicious.

It will take longer than you think
Mar 2020
A wonderful scenic area with stunning views from the summit ridge. The roads are narrow and twisty so it will take you longer than you might expect, especially if you stop at the small towns and museums and have the odd coffee.
Allow a day and I dont think you will be disappointed.

Great day out from Christchurch

A very scenic drive to Akaroa well worth the time and effort. The scenic alternative is not for the faint hearted but the views are spectacular.

Fell in love

Before we completed our tour of the South Island I wanted to see, Banks Peninsula and especially Akaroa mainly to see the views and the French historical influence, you must spend some time in the Museum, it was fantastic with the real history of the peninsula. Here is a tip, if you are looking for the french experience forget it. The Christchurch Council in 1965 decided to put Ru in front of all street names to lure in the tourists, well it worked and Akaroa is thriving with great eateries and a fantastic fish and chip shop right on the water, a must see.

Check out the Penguins at Pohatu Penguins (they are very passionate and you'll learn a lot!), and the cheese factory! We rented a car, but if you need someone to drive you out, Maossie Tours is excellent. Best fish and chips you'll ever eat at The Trading Rooms right on the bay.
