- JDub54Cambridge, United Kingdom28 contributionsGreat introduction to Christchurch! This was a good way to get an introduction to Christchurch. The trams themselves are of historical interest having been built in the early part of the last century. My only complaint being that with all the noises generated by the tram, it was difficult to hear the drivers narrative.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- Alex BloomfieldIsland of Malta, Malta42 contributionsGood way to see the city on a short layoverIt's a good way to see the main sights on a short layover. It's not so much of a transportation means (you could actually walk faster than the tram) but they take you pretty close to all the main sights. The driver points out what's worth seeing and where you need to get off. It's a little pricey imho but still worth it.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 December 2023
- Phil NCootamundra, Australia306 contributionsA blast from the past and an easy way to explore ChristchurchWith our friends we enjoyed exploring Christchurch on these old trams - some originally from Sydney. The old advertising from yesteryear that was still in some carriages added to the charm. We first did a full lap of the city then returned top various locations we chose to get off at. The staff were friendly and informative, and all in all a memorable day was had.Hi there Thanks for joining us. It's great to hear you enjoyed your time on our Heritage Trams and had a memiorable day. We didn't rent a car our first day in Christchurch (because we were getting on the TranzAlpine the next morining), so we used the tram to familiarize ourselves with the city. It was a great deal, as we jumped off when we saw something we wanted to take a look at. The next trolley came within 15 minutes, and it was a very informative way to travel!

My 2.5yo son is crazy about things with wheels, so. I decided to take him on the tram as a Christmas present - $25 for the two of us.
When purchasing the ticket I thought it was pretty steep, we are Christchurch locals and we see the tram around a lot when we are in town, but honestly, it was so worth it! We’re likely to go again soon.
Our tram driver let Arthur ring the tram bell and sit up the front and Arthur is still talking about it, a few days later! Perfect amount of distance and variation for a 2.5yo and we were made to feel very welcome.
The driver was really knowledgeable and friendly and even as a local I learnt something.
Thank you for such a lovely experience for both myself and my son. Best Christmas present in ages!

It takes only 50 minutes for a complete circuit of the city, but one can hop-on and hop-off at any of 17 stops. Some trams are more comfortable than others, but it is great to see these beauties in everyday use, rather than preserved in some transport museum. I travelled the circuit three times with the same driver (Brandon 👏🏻) but on different trams, and each time his commentary brought fresh insights to the city in general and to the vicinity of each stop. Get off at Stop 15 to visit the Quake City exhibition: highly recommended!

This tramway is a great piece of history in the centre of Christchurch. However the route covered can easily be walked in a few minutes.
At 25.00 dollars for a day ticket it is reasonably priced but expensive if you are able bodied and can walk about.

Excellent driver commentary on a restored old trams which trundle around a 17-stop loop, leaving every 15 min. Takes in a host of city’s highlights. Takes about an hour and we hopped on-off all day

We chose to use the tram service which provides a hop on and hop off service so we could see the whole City and decide what to see. The drivers provide a commentary so that the history is explained. Particularly how the city has and is still recovery from the Earthquake which did a lot damage to the city.

Definitely recommend this if you want to check out what's around for an hour first then hop on and off as you please. We got the tram pass along with the boat pass as we wanted to check out Christchurch from land and water both were worth it imo. The tram drivers are amazing though and are really helpful if you're stuck with where to go and what to see. Give you info on your way around and they come and go every 10/15mins so you aren't waiting for long. Pretty sure you got 10% off in certain souvenir shops too with the pass which is good.

We loved the Christchurch tram which for one ticket $25 per adult we could hop on and off all day. We liked having different drivers each time we hopped on. Each driver has their own unique presentation style and you learn new information every time you get a new driver. We hope this tram can be extended in the future to incorporate more features. Highly recommended to travellers to do on day 1 in Christchurch.

We took about five different rides on the tram with the hop on hop off pass. All the conductors are really charismatic and chirpy and gave us great history on the city. A great way to see the central city

You can walk through the city faster than the tram moves from stop to stop. The stops are long - so you are waiting a fair bit often which further delays the experience. It was hard to hear the driver’s narration which was fast and not loud enough to overcome the engine. My 2 sons, 10 and 12 were quite bored (and usually enjoy activities like this). I would not recommend unless you only have a few hours in Christchurch and you cannot walk around easily yourself. Otherwise, save the $35/adult and explore on your own. This is a tourist trap.

Is there still a shuttle bus to the gondola from the museum stop on the tram? We will be there in Feb 24
Written 14 June 2023
Hi there
Thank you for your query. The Gondola Shuttle is not currently operating, but guests wishing to travel to the Christchurch Gondola from central Christchurch can catch the #28 public bus which stops outside the Gondola's base station building. For guests also taking the Christchurch Tram, you can hop off the tram at Stop 5 on the corner of Colombo and Cashel Streets to walk one block south to the Bus Interchange to purchase bus tickets and board the next bus.
Please feel free to contact our reservations team at info@christchurchattractions.nz if you have any further questions.
Kind regards,
Christchurch Attractions

Hi, we are travelling in January 2023 with my 80 year old mum, Is the gondola ride suitable for people travelling with limited mobility. Also interested in the team dinner trip, are there toilets on the tram please?
Written 8 July 2022
Unsure regarding the gondola as we did not use that. No there are no toilets on the tram. There are steps to get on but the staff were very helpful to the elderly we observed getting on and off. Hope this helps.

Where would be the best place to park a motorhome to access the Hop on Hop of Tram, thanks :)
Written 27 June 2020
Park in any of the roads around the botanical gardens, there big and easy to park on.
Then it’s a 15 minutes walk through the gardens and river to the city centre.

The main stops include Cathedral Junction, Cathedral Square, Cashel/High Street shopping precinct, Art Gallery and Arts Centre, Museum and Botanic Gardens/Hagley Park, Avon River, Victoria Square and New Regent Street.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions.
