- JulieMelbourne, Australia6 contributionsTram and Cablecar Experience - A Fabulous 5.5 Hours Spent Visiting Christchurch...Tramway and cablecar experience... A very well organised experience. The 50 min tram ride was most informative and fun. Initially we stood as no seats on the tram were available, but with the number of stops and people getting off, we were quickly seated. The cablecar was fantastic! An 8 minute ride to the top of Mt Cavendish and views from the deck of the Red Rock Cafe were magnificent. A walk around the area (carefully navigating our footsteps around 'sheep eggs'), a visit to the well stocked gift shop, a hot chocolate drink and muffin whilst enjoying the heavenly 360 degree views, completed our visit to this wonderful place. A return cablecar took us back to the base and the well organised bus service collected us to take us into Christchurch. A perfect day, thank you!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2023

- JDub54Cambridge, United Kingdom30 contributionsGreat introduction to Christchurch! This was a good way to get an introduction to Christchurch. The trams themselves are of historical interest having been built in the early part of the last century. My only complaint being that with all the noises generated by the tram, it was difficult to hear the drivers narrative.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- Tourist03975697420Christchurch, New Zealand1 contributionCringey pronunciation of local place names. The tram drivers need to up skill on their pronunciation of kupu Māori. Pronouncing place names correctly as a tour guide to thousands of visitors should be an organisational priority. Ōtautahi, Ōtākaro, Whakaraupō, they only use four or five so it should be an achievable goal. Three of the four drivers we had today were particularly cringey and the story we heard on the naming of Tūranga seems half correct after some further research. Other than that it was a great experience, easy to book, great hop-on/hop-off service. It was fun to be a visitor today in my home city and I even learnt and saw some new things. With investment in staff development, this could be a top attraction that upholds the mana of mana whenua. You can do it Christchurch Attractions! It's not so much of a transportation means (you could actually walk faster than the tram) but they take you pretty close to all the main sights. The driver points out what's worth seeing and where you need to get off. It's a little pricey imho but still worth it.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 December 2023

I decided to take the tram because I injured my foot going up & down Mt Vic in Wellington in the previous days. My husband & I enjoyed it & appreciated the guides’ amusing commentaries tho it was sometimes hard to hear them due to the noises from the tram. They were all very welcoming & I am glad we did it.

It was a great time minus the time travel part being closed. A nice lady employee in the gift shop helped us secure a reservation for a restaurant in Lyttleton before taking the bus further south. I appreciated her willingness to go above & beyond!

The tram was good. It has live narration however instead of the pre-recorded narration for some tours so it works less well for non-English speakers. The narration was informative and stopped near many points of interest. The tram ran regularly (every 15 min?) so getting off didn't mean being stranded. Keep in mind, you could easily walk the entire route in a few hours so it is more for the novelty of the tram and the information, less about the transportation.

was so excited to do this and was terribly disappointed that I did, saw very few nice spots that I could get off at, drove past lots of streets that had nothing interesting but painted walls or graffiti, and when I did get off, it was so hard to jump back on to another tram and had to wait ages. And our tram had trouble, which led to it breaking down for a bit

Good : commentary , vehicles in great condition with friendly staff .
Point of note : as an operation they don't regular the departures and do get bunching on the circuit and therefore gaps - worst case 20mins and you can walk quicker .
Overall very enjoyable .

Slow, expensive, too long between trams. Save the $70 per couple & either walk or get an user or taxi (which are cheaper).
Meant to run all day, but the last circuit starts around 5pm. It is quicker to walk to your next destination as there seems to be a 20 minute walk between trams & then it takes forever for passengers to disembark & board the tram.
In my city we have free bus services within the CBD. Time for Christchurch to get with the program & retire these decrepit trams.

Hi there
Thank you for your feedback,
We find the adult price reasonable due to hop on and off all day aspect. Our last tram departs Cathedral Junction at 5pm and returning in around 6pm. We do have more regular frequencies over the summer with nearly all of our trams out on particular days to make it more frequent meaning less wait time for customers.
We are a privately run company and the tram is mostly a tourist attraction rather than being used as public transport.
Thank you again, we'll take your feedback on board

Is there still a shuttle bus to the gondola from the museum stop on the tram? We will be there in Feb 24

Hi there
Thank you for your query. The Gondola Shuttle is not currently operating, but guests wishing to travel to the Christchurch Gondola from central Christchurch can catch the #28 public bus which stops outside the Gondola's base station building. For guests also taking the Christchurch Tram, you can hop off the tram at Stop 5 on the corner of Colombo and Cashel Streets to walk one block south to the Bus Interchange to purchase bus tickets and board the next bus.
Please feel free to contact our reservations team at info@christchurchattractions.nz if you have any further questions.
Kind regards,

Hi, we are travelling in January 2023 with my 80 year old mum, Is the gondola ride suitable for people travelling with limited mobility. Also interested in the team dinner trip, are there toilets on the tram please?

Unsure regarding the gondola as we did not use that. No there are no toilets on the tram. There are steps to get on but the staff were very helpful to the elderly we observed getting on and off. Hope this helps.

Park in any of the roads around the botanical gardens, there big and easy to park on.
Then it’s a 15 minutes walk through the gardens and river to the city centre.
