The beautiful Avon River seems to meander its way all around inner Christchurch, bringing a green and peaceful oasis around (almost) every turn.
The Christchurch authorities have made a concerted effort to clean up this spring fed stream and it appears to me that they have done a magnificent job.
Tree lined with lots of interesting pedestrian & traffic bridges, it provides a natural border to the stunning botanic gardens. Enjoy it by simply walking its banks or get more involved on a punt or by hiring a kayak or canoe

I grew up in Christchurch and feel a great comfort when I see the Avon River.
It meanders through central Christchurch and creates the natural border for the botanical gardens. Great to see it being used for recreation, with kayaks and other watercraft adding to the beauty.
A feature of any visit to Central Christchurch

The little Avon River that winds it way through the town is very pleasant to stroll along.
Just follow it through gardens as it flows under some interesting bridges and passes some great statues of prominent historic people.
It reminded me soo much of streams that flow through some lovely English towns .
Interestingly you can get a ride down the stream on a gondola , now that would be interesting .
Visit and enjoy

The Avon River runs through the middle of Christchurch. It's quite beautiful, we took a punting trip down the river, propelled by a young man with a puting pole. The Avon is more a stream than a river, but we enjoyed our trip very much and I would recommend a t trip down the Avon the anyone visiting Christchurch. It's part of history.

Disappointed in this area now. Parking too expensive and hard to get close for a disabled person.Re build poorly designed and the city has lost its charm. Doubt I would ever come back to the city. Psrking should be cheap or free to encourage people to walk around and see what is there now.

To walk beside the river and enjoy the beauty of the greenery beside it is special when you know what the city has been through. Wonderful to see the cafe area that has sprung up alongside it in the centre of the city. Although this is an extremely busy part at times you don’t have to wander far to enjoy the river. Is great to grab some food from the many cafes and restaurants and sit closer to the water.

A very pleasant atmosphere close to the city that lets the mind escape the traffic noise for a while. Some of the bridges have a lot of character and the tree lined paths make for an enjoyable walk.
It’s great to watch the gondoliers taking passengers up and down, we’re told that one is a great singer but has been told to cease by the authorities!!

There is stunning scenery in this area. When we visited for the first time recently, it was about 1pm on a beautiful summer day. There were many people having lunch at tables or on the grass or strolling etc along the pathways next to the river.
Excellently well maintained area, well worth visit

This is just a river running through the city but it is worth a mention as there are many lovely plants and trees making the place really serene. The clear water reflects the beauty of its surrounding nature. It is nice to sit here reading a book.

The punting on the Avon was one of those things I thought would be fun. And it was! Our guide was very friendly and informative. I was amazed at how shallow the river actually was. I had never seen an eel up close before. The gentleman who checked us in was more than helpful at explaining how to get where we wanted to go and offered suggestions as to where to go and see. It was a delightful little outing!

Hey there, you can pretty much just pick any part of the river and take a nice walk along it, take a look on google maps! It runs right through the the city so in the city parking would need to be paid for, my favourite parts of the river are in Hagley Park where there is some free parking! There's some nice walks along the Avon in the red zone too where you can park in lots of places along the street! It runs all the way from Mona Vale(also a nice spot)to Brighton!
