One of the neat aspects of time spent in the town centre of Christchurch is the Avon River, which beautifully winds its way through the city. This is an attractive waterway with clear water, often times lined with willows. I enjoyed seeing trout near a...More

Take the punt up this "stream" (it is not a river). It is relaxing and enjoyable if not a tad expensive for what it is.

We saw the river while on the tram ride and whilst visiting the botanic gardens. The punting and canoes looked heaps of fun!

Go on borrow a canoe and paddle up the river through the red zone. It’s quiet and I disturbed, and lots of ducks. If you go as far as you can the herb garden have some great beef food nearby.

Be sure to go to the punting spot so you can see these picturesque boats toodle by. (I don't know that I would bother to be a passenger, but they are pretty to see as they go through the park)

Visited on Tuesday 22nd May. We came across the Avon River a few times as we walked around Christchurch CBD and Hagley Park. A small river but still worth stopping and having a look at from different spots.

The river was beautiful eventhough the lighting was flat for photography. We enjoyed the walks and visiting with the locals. any future trips will be about a month earlier and hope for better weather.

If I close my eyes, I can remember all those places around the river, from Bothanical Gardens to Mona Valley. All my precious memories and romantic moments in NZ.

Spend a couple of hours just lazing on the water, gently punting along while enjoying the beautiful scenery in this part of Christchurch. Its like stepping back a hundred years in time.
