    Chat with the artists
Come in for a coffee and browse the interesting and unique offerings at these shops. I was drawn to Maxine Burney (painting) and Dave shepard's (photography) studio upstairs where they exhibit creative original artwork and also do commissions. Contemplate originals or copies that are reasonably priced and capture both whimsy and realism. I walked away with something from each artist. Im so happy now that Im home that I have these beautiful mementos and reminders of my experience in NZ.

Took the guided tour available and got to go up to the actual Observatory!
Wonderful docent and timely first day tour of the grounds and buildings since we were staying at the Observatory hotel; well worth the few dollars. However, anyone can book it through their website. Able to talk with one artist who had an imaginative photographic showing. Visited the fudge shop, retail area, banquet rooms, tower, etc and heard the history and the future plans. Went behind the scenes and finished in a courtyard that had all sorts of food trucks set up for Sunday dining. How great is that! We visited the Teece museum (free) on our own and went back to Bunsen for breakfast. Missed the movie theater and bar, darn.

    A great piece of Christchurch
Always a cool place to wander around on a nice sunny day. The food provided by the food trucks here are actually quite good and there's a wide range to choose from! Hopefully Christchurch will continue to invest into this place.

Worth the walk to see the shops inside or for a massage
I went to get a massage here. Not only did I receive the best Thai massage I’ve ever had (at Dee Dee’s Thai Massage) but I was very pleasantly surprised with the super cute shops in the building. My kids are teenagers now but the toy shop was so colourful and adorable it made me want to buy gifts for all my friends with babies/young children.

This place doesn't catter for locals, extremely expensive and not value for money. Budget conscious visitors please give this one a miss. Every time I've been there, I've come away disappointed. As a local I won't be supporting this place by visiting in the future.

The arts centre has been around for quite a while...
But it still hasn't fully recovered from the 2011 earthquake, only about 60% back to normal.
There's art galleries, small handicraft shops and the i-site.

My last visit was just before Covid locked down everything. How CHCH has used the time to concentrate on the repairs necessary after the 2011 earthquake. So much more of this magnificent building is now open. The Rutherford exhibition is well worth visiting, charting the life, work and discoveries of this important scientist. The retail outlets are varied : my favourite was the one selling NZ crafted goods. As even, BUNSEN is a great coffee stop.

A bit of a disappointment. Most interesting thing was the bloke with a long beard and a short spokeshave.
Beautifully restored building you must visit though.
Would like to see a small space showing post- earthquake works.

Head there for your very own Hogwarts style experience. My favourite spot for coffee and brunch is Bunsen. The auditorium is a fine piece of architecture and most of the shops are very crafty and eco-friendly. They always held events and markets, so it's definitely a must when you are in town.

It's not often I am a visitor in my home town, but we were hosting my son's partner from Peru and decided to visit the City Center for the day. We took the hop-on hop-off tram and visited the Arts Centre. I actually spent a year doing my Advanced Trades Certificate in shorthand-typing from one of the tutorial rooms many years ago (who learns shorthand these days?). At the time of our visit was an exhibition on Nobel Prize Winner Lord Ernest Rutherford, who completed his undergraduate degree when the centre was part of the University of Canterbury. Much of his early scientifc research was carried out in the den of the Clock Tower building and it is here you can walk back in time, see and test out his experiments, check out his den and lecture theatre with benches, desks and 1920's graffiti, narrow staircases and creaking wooden floors. Just fascinating. Afterwards we visited the Grand Hall, and were entertained by an impromptu performance by a violinist and pianist from the music school. Our peruvian guest is a ballerina who knew the music and was entranced by the performance... wow! There are still parts of the Art Centre still under reconstruction following the earthquake. The staff here are so friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

There were some beautiful artisan products in the shops in the complex. The coffee shop is good and we were there when the buskers were operating so the place had a buzz.
