- Andrew MWellington, New Zealand68 contributionsWonderful exhibits, especially for aircraft aficionadosA wonderful facility showcasing the history and deeds of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The variety of historical aircraft on display is the main drawcard, but the museum also has a number of excellent exhibits telling the stories of the men and women who have served the RNZAF. This needs at least a two hour visit to fully appreciate everything on site.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 October 2023
- Maps330446914632 contributionsA Fantastic Experience, and It's Free! The museum is free to enter, but even for a fee it would be well worth the trip! My friend and I spent a bit of time walking around before a staff member told us about a guided tour. It was $2NZD but was a great time! They gave us extra information about the features on display, we got to tour inside one of the old aircraft, and even got to visit the workshop where they work to restore the displays. If you have an hour or two and you're in Christchurch, please consider stopping by the museum. They do great work there!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 November 2023

A great initiative by the government and a well designed museum. Entrance is free and I would have gladly paid money to enter. We ended up spending more time that what we planned. - Sandy WVancouver, Canada1,773 contributionsAn interesting place with lots to seeEntering this museum can be misleading as it looks like there is only a display of a few airplanes. But don't be fooled! There is another complete hanger of planes in the rear hangar. Most of the plane shown were used for training purposes but that does not depreciate their value. There is good signage to explain the development and origin of these planes. There is a small café inside. Be sure to take the elevator or stairs up to the second floor for a better viewing of the planes. Overall, a good job. We took an Uber here. If you find this review helpful, please give me a link. Adults and children enjoyed the tour at the museum with the volunteers. We also particularly loved the flight simulator.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 February 2024
- Mark LSan Jose, California2 contributionsUnexpected gem & recommended stopWe were looking for something to stop over on our drive up the coast and even the New Zealanders hadn't been here before. Thought it would be a quick drop in, but ended up spending a couple of hours wondering through the museum - reading all the history and looking at all the aircraft and amazing displays. The whole family (grandparents through teenage kids) enjoyed it. Also enjoyed having a coffee and a bite of lunch in the cafe (very good variety and excellent food). And, of course, found a couple of items in the gift shop that were unique purchases. It was an unexpected find and well worth the stop. Free admission, but easy to make a donation either in person or on-line which was also appreciated.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024

Awesome for Young and Old. Set out very well with amazing displays of both aircraft and timeline information. Although free entrance, I would suggest if you didn’t make a donation even in coins you are disrespecting all those who have worked to make this an amazing place and all those who have contributed with their stories of real life events.

We hadn't even intended to visit but we were wasting time waiting for our flight and ran out of time here. Big mistake!
Excellent free museum that has lots of different aeroplanes and paraphernalia to view, along with hundreds of amazing real life stories of New Zealanders' exploits and experiences in the war. Really well presented and accessible, even if you don't think it's your 'thing'.
The prisoner of war section is truly fascinating and takes you on an in depth journey as a POW from capture to release
There's even a proper fighter plane cockpit you can sit in to experience what it was like. Do go - and allow a few hours.

I was expecting a quick visit and ended up spending half a day. The experience was enhanced by the volunteer guide who was a font of background information. I have to give it a five star rating as it is on par with the otherwise incomparable US Air Force museum in Dayton Ohio (when adjusted for population).

Although the museum is free, there are plenty of things to see. You can see a lot of flights and learn more about the air force history of New Zealand. Only one section would need $6 to play. The rest are all free to explore and visit. The museum is rather big!

This is a must visit in Christchurch for aviation or anyone interested in history details related to war.
A great initiative by the government and a well designed museum.

We ended up spending more time that what we planned.

Great museum highlighting a very interesting part of NZs aviation and Air Force history. Well laid out and great informative write ups on the various exhibits. Got a walking guide through the place who was very knowledgeable on the museum and it’s history. Great little behind the scenes look at some future pieces and how they reconstruct the planes. Couldn’t believe this was free admission- definitely worth the donation.

Took our three year old Grandson to Wigram to visit the museum. For an attraction that is free to visit this place is just awesome with both the aircraft and the displays so very professionally shown to their advantage. I could have stayed all day!!
