We had a wonderful morning with James, who is friendly and informative. The area around Lake Coleridge is stunning, and we were keen to experience it in a different way. We’re not regular horse folk but James gives a thorough preparatory presentation so even novices like us will enjoy the experience. Great fun. Thoroughly recommend.

We were looking for an afternoon adventure on a ski lay-day and we found exactly that with High Country Horse Adventures Lake Coleridge. James was incredibly knowledgeable about his horses and the area. Before we mounted up he discussed every horse and their personalities in detail (and it was bang-on!) and how to control these beautiful trail riding horses (even though you could almost simply let them go - they know exactly what to do 😂) even in single digit temps and after the rain set in, soaking us to the skin - it was the complete adventure!
Thanks James. Great afternoon (even thanks to BeeBee - you naughty horse 😉)

Perfect afternoon out with James and his easygoing, sweet horses down to the glacial riverbeds of the Rakaia river near Lake Coleridge. Beautiful views! Such a fun family adventure!

Getting into NZs remote high country is not easy, but James, Bre, Dylan and their family of horses made it possible for 3 of my girlfriends and I to ‘escape’ for a 3 day adventure we’ll never forget! The horses are fit and responsive; James and team so knowledgeable and relaxed; and the scenery epic beyond words. Huts perfect, food plentiful and delicious and to top it off we were treated to perk coffee at each stop! I Can’t recommend this trail experience high enough... looks like I’m planning another adventure soon - by demand of other friends keen to join me! Thank you!

My wife and I, ages 73 and 71 were on this 3 day horse trek in February pf 2020.

Our horse trek with HIGH COUNTRY HORSE ADVENTURES exceeded our expectations, and our expectations were high. James Cagney, owner of the company, was also our guide, and was assisted by Karly. They were always there when needed and were particularly attentive to everyone's safety. Although they were non-stop busy, they never seemed hurried. The horses were wonderful, the scenery spectacular and the trail food was good. We are beginner/novice level riders and were comfortable at all times.

We highly recommend this experience and look forward to going back ourselves,

My daughter and me had an amazing whole day ride in stunning scenery around lake Coleridge. It was the best ride we had so far and we had many in the last 9 years. Horses keen to run, river, hills and farmland to ride through....Memories that will last forever. My daughter was very happy to finally ride "big horse", very responsive and eager to run! And James is a caring, very patient guide. Thank you! We will be back.

The treks that James takes you on give some of the most amazing views in the south island. We went on the 2hr trek and it was absolutely amazing. Got to ride up to some amazing scenery. Best activity we did in the south island.

I shouted my wife a 4 hour trek for her birthday, its been about 40 years since I'd been on a horse and James was able to match my previous riding experience with a suitable horse "Orange". Couldn't have picked better.

Gloriously sunny day riding through forests, up and down hills and across rivers made for an unforgettable day that had my wife enjoying her birthday with the biggest smile ever.

An added bonus was when we stopped by the river for coffee and home made muffins supplied by James whose knowledge of the area and his horses further enhanced the experience.

My wife is already talking about going back and doing an overnight trip.

Couldn't recommend James and his horses more !! Thanks James

My friend and I visited NZ for 3 weeks from the UK and chose to do a half day ride on our last day in the South Island and boy was that the way to finish off an epic holiday! James was so welcoming and friendly, really knowledgeable about the country and you could tell how much he loved his beautiful horses. We’re both experienced riders but a little out of practice, however we did get back into our galloping stride which was just awesome with the scenery around us! We had Lester and Orange who were just the sweetest horses, very obedient and we felt at ease from the moment we arrived. The ride itself was just breathtaking, trekking from the field where the horses are kept up through some woods and then down towards the river with Mt Hutt overhead, and with it being such a hot day the crossing of the river was a welcome cool down! I couldn’t recommend James and his amazing horses enough and we’ll 10000000000% be returning for maybe a full day or multi day on our next NZ trip! Thanks so much James!!
