John Godley was known as the Founder of Canterbury and this centrally located statue was apparently the first statue portraying a person in New Zealand!

John Robert Godley is regarded as the founding father of Canterbury. His statue in Cathedral Square in Christchurch is a memorable dedication. Worth a photo stop.

John Robert Godley is the founding father of Canterbury. The statue is in the square out front of the cathedral. Its another nice statue commemorating the history of the area. Again, have a look, take a photo and be back on your way sight seeing around this beautiful city.

Facing the Cathedral at Cathedral Square is the statue of John Robert Godley, the important 19th-century figure who is considered the Founder of Canterbury.

The statue is the work of sculptor Thomas Woolner and was originally installed in 1867. Like many others around the city, it was damaged badly in the 2011 earthquakes. The monument was repaired and reinstalled at the square in 2015.

What you will see is a two-metre tall figure of an middle aged Godley wearing statesman attire. He faces forward with coat folded and held in his left hand while gripping his hat in his right hand. The statue is atop a stone plinth of simple design.

It is a fine statue worth seeing if you enjoy monument viewing during your travels.

Visited on Tuesday 22nd May. Most people stand beside this statue and look at the damaged Cathedral not realising it's significance.

This statue of founder of Canterbury is standing tall facing the ruin of Cathedral Church in the middle of the square. John Robert Godley, if he can say something, he will be sad to see the ruin of Cathedral Church in front of him.

John Robert Godley's bronze statue stands in the heart of Christchurch at Cathedral Square to commemorate the Founder of Canterbury. It was unveiled on the 8th August 1867 by magistrate Charles Bowen. It was the first portrait statue in Ne Zealand for nearly 20 years. When the statue fell of its plinth in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake inside the plinth was a time capsule. The time capsule will be raised in the year 2067 on the 200th anniversary of the unveiling of the statue. The statue is Heritage Listed.
