What an amazing drive it is through Haast pass, rugged mountains, moss drenched trees and waterfalls abound. Plenty of places to pull over for photos and enjoy the peace and serinity. Leave plenty of time for this awesome drive.
As with all roads on the west coast you need lots of time to enjoy the scenery around you and the ample stopping points where you can stretch your legs to see a waterfall etc. Not something to be rushed.
As I was biking the entire route, it was quite an uphill right from the Gates of Haast bridge, but after a km it eases out. There are waterfalls galore and many lookout points and short hikes along this road. Must see Fan Tail and...More

The walk is not very long, I did it in about 5 minutes as a fast walker. A stroll i think would only take 15 minutes. It's not paved but there is a defined track that you could bring a stroller on, however the swing bridges over to the pools might not be wide enough.
If you're comfortable leaving it at the bridges (which you'd probably have to anyway as right down by the water there are stairs and lots of rocks) then I'd suggest that, but you could take your time doing the walk and not get the little ones too tired.
