Wellington’s rich and diverse Māori history is uncovered with Te Wharewaka o Pōneke Waka (Canoe) and Māori Cultural Walking Tours. An indigenous Māori cultural experience provides visitors to Wellington and New Zealand with an authentic and unique opportunity to share in the rich culture and history of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and the Te Ātiawa/Taranaki Whānui (tribe) Our Waka (canoe) and Māori Cultural Walking tours all start at the iconic building, Te Wharewaka o Pōneke (waka house). The building sits between Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum, and is harbour frontage to the Te Aro Pā (settlement) one of the largest Māori communities in Wellington in its time. Its modern architecture contains distinct Māori cultural aspects and housed inside are three traditionally carved working waka, as well as a café and conferencing facilities. The waka are launched from our floating pontoon into the safety of Whairepo lagoon. With perfect weather conditions and at the discretion of the kaihautū (captain), the waka can travel out into the harbour.

Really interesting tour, first a talk about the waka, or boats, and the chance to ask questions. And then a walking tour, learning about New Zealand and Wellington Maori history and legends. A unique experience.

As a Wellingtonian I still found I learnt a lot on this tour. The guide was engaging and interesting and I really enjoyed it despite bad weather. It would be fabulous on a good day walking around the waterfront.

Te Wharewaka has a lovely little cafe with indoor/outdoor service -- the food on offer is nicely prepared and tasty. Our Flat white coffees were just OK. There's also facility for a conference for approx. 120-150 attendees and this could be a good choice for...More
