I believe this library is closed. Be sure to check online about that before visiting it. They have open and smaller spaces to accommodate people wanting the library. Wish it was opened!

This location was abruptly closed when an engineer's assessment found the building might not be safe enough if we had another significant earthquake. There's a temp library nearby at 12 Manners St., but it doesn't have the character (or size) of the Victoria St main library.

I loved the old location in Victoria Street with the burnished bronze arty statue palms...but I did like the staff at the Manners Street location. They were so helpful and obliging. I quickly found the reference materials I was after with their assistance!

Turned up and really sad as closed due to earthquake risk along with many other feature buildings. How strict are they? Are all the buildings closed earthquake risks or are the standards too strict. Disappointed

Libraries in New Zealand have changed immensely and gone are the days of having to "shh" they are now exciting vibrant Learning hubs, very much Child-Friendly. Wellington Library is my favourite Library in New Zealand and trust me I have been to many! Computers, music to listen to on Headphones, and of course lots of awesome books.

We had a cafe mocha from this cafe located inside the library. The drink also came with a snack on the side.

Library definetely closed, what a pity ! Plenty of other things to do in town and on the quays, but don't rely on the library for internet or a book !

We wandered into the City Library looking for public restrooms and were surprised to discover how busy and active the library was. We saw people everywhere reading, meeting and holding discussions. We also noted signs of coming events. There is a small cafe/restaurant inside and it seemed to us that people who work in the area of the library were there to eat lunch. It was refreshing to see a public library utilized so well.

The library has a good collection of a wide range of books and magazines and a good cafe. However it is in an area of the city that will be affected by a "big" earthquake. It was found not to meet the newly updated building code standards so the Council has closed it while they consider what supplementary work it needs to bring it up to the latest earthquake safety standards.
