The City to Sea Bridge connects the city to the harbour as the name suggests. It is unique for it’s shape making it a good photo stop.

Venice has the Rialto & the Bridge of Sighs, Prague the Charles Bridge & Paris the Pont des Arts. Wellington has the City to Sea Bridge - a bridge of significant importance that not only spans roads & connects public spaces but is also a public artwork where ancient Maori mythology & modern symbolism blend into one.
Let me take you there now...
Picture if you will a balmy summers evening (Wellington is famous for them). The harbour is a glistening orb of deep azure & the sky a delicate eggshell tinged with teal & rose as dusk gently approaches. After a fine meal at one of the Wellington's many & varied waterfront eateries you find yourself drifting languidly along the edge of Whairepo lagoon pausing at the boat shed where ancient Maori Waka (canoes) lie in timeless anticipation of travel. Looking west towards the inner city a roughly hewn but deceptively delicate structure rises above a busy road, adorned with carvings & sculptures from both ancient times & the future. This is the City to Sea Bridge.
Created in the early 90’s by notable Maori artist Paramatchett it, along with its companion piece Te Aho a Māui (Māui's fishing line), explores the Maori creation myth of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour) where the legendary hero Māui, using the jawbone of his ancestor Muri-ranga-whenua as a fish hook, hauled up a great fish from the ocean, which became Te-Ika-a-Māui, (the fish of Maui) the North Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
As you climb the stairs you the lagoon & harbour stretches out behind you while the city beckons you closer.
One one side of bridge there are two taniwha called Ngake and Whātaitai. On the other side are two manu (birds). Other sculptures are whales, patiki (flounder), and fish.
Some sculptures are on metal poles, including a star and the phases of the moon, which were inspired by the flag used by Te Kooti (a Māori military leader and prophet).
As you cross the bridge you approach a stone pyramid. This is Te Aho a Māui, representing a mountain, split in two. The paved walkway between the two sides of the pyramid represents Māui's fishing line, unravelling from the mountain to the sea.
Now you stand atop the stairway above the Civic Square - an open public space fringed by the Michael Fowler Centre, the Wellington Town Hall, the Wellington City Art Gallery and the Wellington Central Library.
All is at you feet. Indulge & enjoy.

This bridge is beautiful and is not just a bridge connecting people, it is also a work of art made of old wood. One of the nicest I have seen! Recommended!

This bridge serves a practical purpose to move pedestrians across a busy road but it is the decorations that make it. Well worth a look if you are down on the waterfront.

What a surprising structure! It's a super cool bridge from the city to the waterfront - with many carvings, structures and sitting areas to take in beautiful Wellington Harbour.

The bridge is just part of it all. The waterfront is lovely, filled with a diving area the kids were using, shops, garden, bars restaurants, canoe club. Lots to see and do, or sit and take in the atmosphere. Lovely. Sits just a couple of streets down from the shops all very easy to walk round and see.

The City to Sea Bridge is quite an unusual construction. A solution was sought through a competition to connect the Civic Square to the harbour which was separated by a busy city road, this is the winning entry. Wood is the major material used, there are many interesting and unique adornments, artworks, sculptures, it's an open space for young and old to enjoy. From the bridge there are nice views over Whairepo Lagoon and over to the Wellington Harbour.

Calling this bridge unique is sort of an understatement.
Some people see it as ugly.
I found it mostly interesting.
It features some lovely wooden parts, which give it its unique look.
Not really an attraction by itself, but you're bound to walk past (it or over it) when going to the Te Papa museum or to the civic square.
Some local teens and tourists make the bridge their meeting place.

At the International Sevens tournament in Wellington this weekend. At the end of the parade all the teams gather in the Town square at the city side base of this fantastic walkway. After the official bit was over, many thousands of people dispersed over the bridge and out onto the most excellent waterfront that is an incredible part of Wellington. This is truly an excellent interconnection between the business environment and the social relaxation that is available to all.
