Booked a cottage at Ngawi to catch up with offspring and partners. Decided to earn some food and a beer by walking to the pinnacles. Sunny day so running shoes all that was needed. Boots advisable if wet and slippery. Some great rock formations, suggest...More
It may not look like much from the side of the road but this is an absolute gem of a place. Incredible rock formations and beautiful views - even stretching to the South Island on a clear day. Truly incredible. Climb to the top and...More
Me and a group of eleven friends took the hike to the top and slept in the cabin for a night to catch the sunrise early in the morning.
I myself am not an experienced hiker so it was fairly tough but very rewarding and...More
We had the pinnacles scheduled for what turned out to be an extremely windy rainy day, but that made the hike even more rewarding! There's a Lower and upper track, we took the upper to avoid trudging through too much water. Alot of incline! But...More
We hiked from the base to the pinnacles and it took about 45 minutes to reach the top. Nice walk with a gorgeous view at the top. Well worth the trip. We only saw one other couple the entire time we were there. Stop at...More
Even if you're not a fan of Peter Jackson's films (he has used this place many a time for a filming location) it is definitely worth the drive and walk up the river bed to see these surreal natural rock formations.

I think it is achievable, but would suggest you get a fairly early start from Wellington. You definitely need a good day to do the pinnacles. Are you aware that as well as the pinnacles there is a seal colony a bit further on and the Cape Palliser Light House. Then just a stones when you've done with all that for a nice drink and fish and chips at Lake Ferry hotel....if you want to fit all of that in, definitely to Mount Bruce on a different day.
